Song of the Week: Donny Hathaway – “To Be Young, Black, And Gifted”

For any soul that has had a conversation with me or read my blog, you know that there are 3 things I love. Women, Hip-Hop, and My People (all of these being used as very broad, open terms.) After hearing about, and watching the fatal beating of Derrion Albert this week, I felt it was appropriate that we take time out for this weeks Song of the Week, not just send our love and prayers to his family and friends as well as those that were affected by the events, but to reflect on what it means to be a community. That one day, that one moment, as many as 5 lives were dynamically altered, one of which will not be replaced. At some point, it’s bigger than you and what may be convenient and comfortable. We’ve been long past that point…so what are YOU going to do about it? I’m speaking specifically to those who “look like me” when I say this: We each have a responsibility to ourselves and others in our community. We’ve got to do better. I’m sorry that I haven’t done more in my past, but thankful that I will do more in my future. We just can’t sit bye and let this stuff happen. Yes, I know you come here for Hip-Hop, but sometimes, it really IS bigger than Hip-Hop. R.I.P. Derrion Albert

    1. If you click his name, it’ll give you a better story and visual, but the short version. There was a gang fight, he was a bystander, tried to get out of the middle of it, and was killed. They broke a board over his head, punched him, stomped him, etc. And by gang fight, I’m talking about 30 to 50 people all throwing haymakers and such.

  1. I also read another boy who is 14 years old got beat up on the northside in Chicago and he is in critical condition. What is up with these teens and kids nowadays?? It seem like you’ll have to treat them as they like an adult since they are killing folks. RIP Derrion, that is a unfortunate situation. Them type of stories are sick. I remember 10 years ago they wouldn’t even show videos like that on National TV.

  2. Great song selection for SOTW Saule especially in connection with the tragic event involving Derrion Albert. I am definitely on the same page as you in regards to us as people having to do more and do better within our communities and cities to combat senseless violence and killings like this. Being somebody that was born and raised in Chicago makes this situation hurt even worse cause it’s almost like CPS (Chicago Public School) student deaths/teen deaths are becoming common place for the city from it happening so often. Gang shit trips me out to cause like this situation it most of the time stems down to new members proving themselves more established members in the gang in the form of recruiting new members or killing a random individuals to make an example and prove your loyalty. You’re right that it’s situations like this that should make us realize that it’s bigger than Hip-Hop and a lot of other stuff when issues like this should be priority. This is a prime example of why music, Hip-Hop specifically, has to get back to talking about real issues/problems and not always about money, women, jewelry, etc. Props for bringing peoples’ attention to what’s going on.
