Django Unchained came out last year and I liked it and even put it as #3 on my ‘Movies of the Year’ list. But I could see others having a point to why they didn’t like it. Spike Lee said that “American slavery was not a Sergio Leone spaghetti western. it was a holocaust” and there’s a point in that. I can also see the point of seeing a movie about slavery without the need of a white savior. So if Django Unchained wasn’t for you, 12 Years A Slave probably is. Here the synopsis:
12 Years A Slave is based on the 1853 autobiography of Solomon Northup, a free black man who was kidnapped in Washington D.C in 1841 and sold into slavery. He worked on plantations in the state of Louisiana for 12 years before his release.
Even if I hadn’t seen the trailer, 12 Years a Slave still looks great. Just look at the cast: Chiwetel Ejiofor, Brad Pitt, Michael Fassbender, Benedict Cumberbatch, Quvenzhané Wallis, Michael K. Williams, & Paul Giamatti. Plus the director is Steve McQueen. And besides being Black, he also has a great track record even though 12 Years A Slave is only his third movie (I’ve seen Shame, which is great, but I have yet to see Hunger. Both starred Michael Fassbender).
Check out the trailer below. 12 Years a Slave opens on October 18th.
