Alabama Shakes are a group I’m aware of but didn’t pay attention to their music. Their frontwoman, Brittany Howard is embarking on a solo career and I’m liking what I am hearing. She released the video for her first single, “Stay High,“ returning Terry Crews to his Julius character from Everybody Hates Chris‘s as a hard working father returns home to his family after a hard day’s work in coveralls. Today’s selection is a story of how Brittany saw a hate crime when she was little. Her father’s car was damaged and the perpetrators left a goat’s head in the backseat to send a message, but they also made a little mixed-ish girl think about her genetic make-up.
The Athens, Alabama native had a concert to celebrate the release of her solo debut, Jaime named after her sister who passed from retinoblastoma, the same disease that left Ms. Howard with partial blindness in one eye. R.I.P. to her and congratulations to her sister on keeping her legacy alive. Happy Sunday!
