On June 18th, the season 3 premiere of Showtime’s The Chi was released ahead of its Sunday’s air date on YouTube. On Sunday, its creator, Lena Waithe hosted a fundraiser for the Equal Justice Initiative titled, The Chi With Lov‘ featuring performances from Chi-Town’s finest: Common, Twista, Jamila Woods, Ravyn Lenae, MFnMelo, and BJ The Chicago Kid. Even the show’s Jacob Latimore was on hand to perform as well.
The concert is dedicated to raising awareness and funds for the Equal Justice Initiative. A $500,000 donation was made by SHOWTIME and ViacomCBS on behalf of the drama series THE CHI. The Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) is committed to changing the narrative about race in America and works with communities that have been marginalized by poverty and discouraged by unequal treatment. The organization is also dedicated to reforming policing in America, improving public safety by building trust with communities and changing police culture.
