He would be played by Donald Glover. Picture it! It’s 2009 and we got to cast for this comic book movie, but wait, let’s make it a Black movie. Quick, get that stand up comedian fresh off one season of Community and that Mystery Team movie he did with his friends that do the web skits.
In honor of the tenth anniversary (yesterday, August 13th) of one of my favorite movies ever, I thought it would be great to fix one of its biggest errors. Ain’t no Black people in this fictional version of Toronto. The Edgar Wright adaptation of the Bryan Lee O’Malley comic has a cast that consists of several up and comers that went on to culturally impactful character roles of the millennial generation. Captain America (Chris Evans) and Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) alone should be enough to tell you that the casting was on point. Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Aubrey Plaza, Anna Kendrick, Mae Whitman, Brandon Routh (Superman!), and Kieran Culkin all continue working and being relevant in the entertainment industry. Thankfully, they all found time to do a table read of the entire script in honor of the 10th birthday of ‘Scott Pilgrim Vs The World’ (and charity) last month.
I’m in lesbians with this film, but I hate that no one here has my complexion or any traces of melanin. If this was 2009 and I was in charge of casting, this would be my cast:
- Romona Flowers – Tessa Thompson
- Knives Chau – Ellen Wong (No one could do it better! Also, she’s not white.)
- Stacey Pilgrim – Lauren London
- Gideon “G-Man” Graves – Michael B. Jordan
- Roxy – Gabby Sidibe
- Todd Ingram – Lance Gross
- Wallace Wells – Damon Wayans Jr.
- Envy Adams – Meagan Good
- Stephen Stills – Brandon T. Jackson
- Kim Pine – Nicole Beharie
- Young Neil – Tristian “Mack” Wilds
- Julie Powers – Naturi Naughton (Yes, I know Aubrey Plaza isn’t white, but this is my cast list.)
- Matthew Patel – Alfred Enoch
- Lucas Lee – Chadwick Boseman
- Vegan Police – Dwayne Johnson and Samuel L Jackson
- The Voice – Phil Lamaar
What do you think? Watch Scott Pilgrim vs the World Front on Netflix and picture this cast in your head while watching. Enjoy and peep the previously mentioned table read below.
