Grace Jones being a Song of the Week on nappyafro is just as surprising to me as is it to you. But here we are. “Nightclubbing” feels like something I would have written about in my Sample Clearance column but I really don’t feel like it. So again, here we are. Let me get on with the semi-random thoughts:
- How in the hell did I not know Shyne’s “Bad Boyz” sampled Grace Jones’s “Nightclubbing”? I mean really?
- I think it was because that Shyne album came out when I was bootlegging CDs and wasn’t able to read the liner notes like I usally did. I do remember printing out the cover to Shyne.
- I probably thought “Bad Boyz” sampled some Barrington Levy song I didn’t know about (Which it does but just with the “diddly diddly diddly diddly diddly woah” parts). I really don’t mess with reggae like that.
- Speaking of Shyne, isn’t it cool to see him on Drink Champs? He is apart of House of Representatives in Belize and he even looks like Barack Obama now. That nigga did ten years in prison so I salute the growth.
- Back to “Nightclubbing”: That song is hard. I have been unironically playing it all week while mean mugging and shit. I told Jamonté this (more about him later) and he probably thought I was joking. I wasn’t
- Even though I’m an old head, I have no real idea of Grace Jones’s music career. I mainly know her from Boomerang as Strangé (where I feel most Black people know here from), Zula from Conan the Destroyer, and when she fucked James Bond in A View to a Kill (Watch that scene and tell me I am wrong).
- All this lead to me getting her autobiography, I’ll Never Write My Memoirs. I will tell you how that goes.
- This Song of the Week is all due to Jamonté aka @rulerofmyself on Instagram and Twitter. He posted this song in his stories and I told him I was gonna write about it. He is one of the funniest and coolest people to follow on any platform so check him out.
