Boyz N Da Hood – Back Up N Da Chevy [Review]

Boyz N Da Hood - Back Up N Da Chevy

With this being the second album from Boyz N Da Hood, this one titled Back Up N Da Chevy, BNDH has reupped with a new member Gorilla Zoe, after losing Jeezy to the solo path. Bad Boy South has to be the only label that’s releasing their artists stuff on time. This is the third album in just over a month from the camp. History tends to repeat itself, let’s hope it doesn’t do that to the group again.

The album starts off with “Everybody Know Me” where the Boyz basically rap their rap sheet…following? The beat is hot, but it’s not that big single that “Dem Boyz” was. It’s worth checking out. Next up is “Bite Down” and it starts off with a dude persuading a female to pop a pill. The song follows and it’s more of the same, “get drunk, do a line, pop a thing, bite down!” So if that is your thing, this one is for you. “Say What’s On Your Mind” is next and immediately the track catches you and makes you forget about the rappers, because the content isn’t anything you haven’t heard before. Yung Joc makes an appearance on “Nothing is Promised” and Block is popping off, letting everybody know that he is doing major things! The production is decent on this one, but once again they get overshadowed by the beat. Joc couldn’t save this one. Now “We Ready” has Joc written all over it. The beat is commanding and the crew put up some strong bars to compliment the track. I like this line, “I got a mean appetite, call me starving Marvin, cause I trap all night, by the Starvin Marvin!” Hate on Joc if you want, but that was a hot line! This one is a CERTIFIED BANGER! Ice Cube shows up for “Choppas” and as soon as Nice Cube starts rapping about guns, slapping people up, and saying he’s seen more blood than Dracula, the track was ruined for me. But the Boyz did a good job salvaging the song after Cube fumbled the snap. The Posse cut on the album is “Block Boyz” featuring the whole Block Ent. roster. T-Rok, Alfa Mega, Yung Joc and Durty join in and it’s a nice anthem for the label. Check it out! “We Ridin'” follows and for a second I thought that Joc was the fifth member of the group. Back to the songs, the track is a winner all around with a good beat and some nice lyrics. CHECK IT OUT! The “Boss” Rick Ross lends a hand and offers a sixteen on “Paper”. If Ross is on the track, drug references might be in the forecast! But it’s a nice song, I just think Jody does too many of the hooks. Not that he’s bad, just wanted to hear someone else. They switch gears on the title track “Back Up N Da Chevy” with the production not as 808 heavy. This track is kind of happy go lucky, not fitting in with the other songs. SKIP! T-Pain makes his mandatory appearance on “Table Dance” and once again T-Pain has been stereotyped again. Every time he’s around the song is about or involving strippers or the strip club. At the beginning they said, “we had to do one for the h**s!” Oh, is that what they are called! But if you like that atmosphere, then you will like this one. “We Thuggin'” follows and once again Jody is on the hook, this one however is not that good. The track is lackluster and the lyrics are on the boring side. The hook goes like this, “the whole click tote pistols, f**K your lucky charms”? My point exactly! NEXT! The last song is “No Haters Allowed” and as usual Jody on the hook, a true ball hog! The beat is hot, and the Boyz put together a nice one to close out the album.

Bottom Line:
This album was better than what I expected. I was wondering how the group was going to rebound without Jeezy. They bounced back and put together a better album than their first one. This one had more of the street music that is popular right now on it. The last one had a more Diddy feel to it. You can tell Block took control of this project with the hood appeal that the LP has. Now I wonder if anybody is going to jump ship now that they have scored with a good album. Hey Block, when is Jody Breeze coming out?
