Joey Bada$$ – 1999
Released: July 12, 2012
I have to apologize for the crew here at nappyafro. I don’t think we did enough to put the proper shine on Joey Bada$$. Like K.R.I.T. his appeal is on his music. No gimmicks or tricks, just dope lyricism and a vintage appeal that reminds of of the Golden Age of Hip-Hop. The magic trick with this cat is that is that he comes off wise and seasoned and he’s not even old enough to vote (At the time of the release). The interludes, production, song choices and natural feel of all of those combined makes him one of the brightest young stars on the horizon. If you managed to somehow go through 2012 without listening to 1999, allow this cat with beats by Dilla and MF Doom take you back to when it wasn’t about catchy one liners, syrup, and poppin’ molly’s. This ain’t trash rap, this is the culture reborn. – Saule Wright
