I’ll start off by saying there are things that work and a lot of things that don’t. On a production level, I really hope Kanye West doesn’t get in the habit of recording with numerous producers for each track. Much like Cruel Summer, this album is overproduced. Whenever you see additional producers listed, it usually means that they were the ones who fucked up the track. Something will be working and all of a sudden, someone will throw in unnecessary sound effects. I bet Daft Punk themselves were scratching their heads after hearing the final product. That said, some of the beats aren’t too bad, but what really kills it for me are the lyrics on here. For the most part, the verses are poorly written and his rhyme scheme comes off lazy. How are you going to make a track titled, “I Am God”, and spit god awful lyrics over it? (That’s the point? Get the fuck outta here).
The entire album sounds rushed and Rick Rubin even admitted it. It’s not terrible, it’s not great, it just sits in the middle. If you’re into gay European electro-pop shit, you’ll probably love it. The best track on here is “Bound 2” (also have “Blood on the Leaves” as a standout). Kanye works best with soul samples. I wish one day he’d come down from his fantasy world and return to what made him.
Overall, Yeezus is something KANYE has never made before. That doesn’t make it revolutionary or groundbreaking. Whenever Kanye does something different, his hardcore fans buy into it, and all of a sudden he’s a pioneer of that type of music. And Kanye knew that before recording this album. So I just want to make clear that artists like El-P, Death Grips, P.O.S., Aesop Rock, Zion I and many more have been making electronic Hip-Hop for years…and been doing it better than this.
