“I’m not sure why it seems like the new trend is for rappers in their twilight years of their career have to go through their catalogs to find the best quality album and take the title and duplicate it for a piece if garbage so called sequel.” Those were my thoughts after listening to The Marshall Mathers LP2 the first time, and that nearly was going to be all I wrote for this second look. For the score I would have asked B if I could just say 1 and paste my hand on the site flipping every Eminem Stan off.
Well I kept listening to it, and my opinion has drastically changed. Are there missteps on this album? Fuck yes! I hate most of the production on here and I am extremely disappointed with the lack if hard hitting subject matter Marshall has displayed in the past. I hate all of the singles, even “Rap God”. Still there are moments on this album that reminds you why Em is the only rapper that has a “lighter” skin tone that we hold on the level of Jay-Z and Nas. Em’s wordplay is still there but I’m not sure his passion is where we remember it. Enlisting Rick Rubin was a mistake, doing a over the top fun song with Kendrick Lamar instead if a lyrical sparring session was a mistake, shit apologizing to your mother may have been the biggest mistake, but when you compare this album to other Hip-Hop projects and not Marshall’s own catalogue you know this is still a good project.
