Kanye West – Yeezus
Released: June 20, 2013 ~ Reviewed: June 18, 2013 (4 Stars)
Kanye is on a mission to be bigger than Pac and a historical-cultural icon that transcends Hip-Hop. In his quest to be this godlike figure (pun intended) he gave us Yeezus, his huge colorful middle finger to the industry. The entire project was unconventional and experimental even for Kanye standards. Songs like “Blood on the Leaves”, “Black Skinkead”, “I Am God”, and “New Slaves” push you to boundaries that songs made today traditionally don’t even attempt to reach. To call Yeezus a creative project would be sacrilege. To not listen to it and form an opinion is blasphemous. While it may not be our album of the year, like GQ has said on many FROCASTS, it may be the defining album of the year. People will mark 2013 by it’s release, not it’s success commercially or otherwise. It will be the album that folks think back to when we ultimately call Kanye an Icon or an Imbecile. – Saule Wright
