I’m really annoyed. Boom 94.5 in Dallas has become Majic 94.5 this week. Two years ago, the station’s format switched to Old-School Hip-Hop. From Afrika Bambaataa to X-Clan, there was a great escape from hearing the same contemporary songs from the other Hip-Hop stations in the city. Last year, the station started incorporating Old-School R&B. There is already an Old School & “Today’s” R&B station, but we know that means they’re aiming for the Essence Music Festival crowd with no attempts at attracting the AfroPunk scene. This week, the Old School Hip-Hop station has added Tom Joyner to the morning line-up and D.L. Hughley to the afternoon drive.
I have no hope that this new station will become a clone of other R&B stations that only play music that recreates yesteryear or is too popular to ignore. Bruno Mars and Mary J. Blige are safe, but why is it so hard for me to hear Solange, SZA, or 6lack on radio stations like this. I don’t even think I’ve ever heard Frank Ocean or The Weeknd on these dinosaur stations and they’re globally renowned artists. I picked the 1st thing I saw under my YouTube subscriptions that resembled anything close to R&B. Enjoy the latest visual from Lana Del Rey‘s Lust For Life, the smooth “White Mustang”.
