At 24, I realized that I was older than some of the artists that made my favorite music. It didn’t matter if they were unable to rent a car, they told their stories and shared their perspectives thru their art in a way that made them relatable to fans, young and old.
Five years ago, Mac Miller was one of those artists and he continued to be with each new release including his latest, Swimming. Today, I’m going to pay tribute to Mr. Malcolm McCormick with a cut from his debut album, Blue Slide Park that is still one of my musical energy shots. “Under The Weather” from the then 19-year-old Pittsburgh native could tell the difference between fake and real love and understood the power of fame and recognition that he was receiving so fast. Judging by verse 2 of track 7, I believed he knew what he was getting into, unfortunately, it would be three years before he was finally sober after spending years battling his addictions.
Earlier this year, Miller was arrested for DUI and as a fan I began to worry that he was sliding back into substance abuse. With the release of Swimming last month, I believed that Larry Fisherman understood his mistakes and corrected his errors as he was as transparent as ever on his fifth album with songs like “Self Care”, “So It Goes”, and “2009”. Ultimately, was fighting a clock that didn’t have much time left. God Bless, Mac Miller. Job Well Done.
Do you believe in fairytales, dreams come true?
One day you gone make it
If they gave you hand out, and you were down bad
Would you take it?
I found that bein’ famous in reality, well it ain’t shit
Cause you could have the world in the palm of your hand
But it don’t mean a thing ‘til you change it
Listen, baby, I’mma be great now
We can watch a movie, fuck it, stay up late
I’mma make my way to the top, every day I get closer
When I was young they told me to wait until I’m older
They turned a cold shoulder to me
And now they want tickets to my shows for the free
“Hey Mac, can I take a pic? Can I have an autograph?”
Bitch suck my dick
We all wanna know what to do in this world
When it seems that there’s nothing left
And we dream just to dream
But we don’t know exactly how to get there yet
And we all wanna know what to do in this world
When it seems that there’s nothing left
And we dream just to dream
But we don’t know exactly how to get there yet
