Hopefully, if you mess with nappyafro as a staff, record label, and a crew, you have checked out our video TOP 5 HOOD MOVIE GIRLFRIENDS. You may have also noticed that in the video we used the instrumental of Akeem Ali‘s “Keemy Casanova.“ Saule Wright picked “Keemy Casanova” for our Songs of 2020 list and it deserved to be there.
It’s a few things to love about “Keemy Casanova,” but a reason I like it is that it reminds me of one of my all-time favorite songs: “Super Soul Sis” by Warren G & Jah Skills. “Super Soul Sis” is already on the forever-updating Official nappyafro Playlist. Weirdly enough, I have never done a deep dive on what the hell happened to Jah Skills (or Da 5 Footaz for that matter). I didn’t however deem Regulate… G Funk Era a classic.
That brings us to the reason that both these songs exist. Both sampled “Don’t Stop (Ever Loving Me)” by One Way featuring Al Hudson. I have no idea this group existed and besides doing research in the past, I have never had an older relative talk about or reference this song. It’s still dope as hell even though the tempo is way slower than I expected. The Michigan-born band is still out here doing the damn thing and even dropped an album in 2019. Salute to them.
A little bonus here: I totally forgot that Nelly also sampled “Don’t Stop (Ever Loving Me)” on “Luven Me” which appears on Country Grammar. That’s not a bad song either.
