Me choosing 2Pac‘s “Can’t C Me” as Song of the Week may seem random, I guess it kinda is, but I have been trying to make it Song of the Week for a minute so this is as good a time as any. But let’s just get to my bulleted thoughts on track #1 on Disc 2 off All Eyez on Me:
- “Can’t C Me” has Dr. Dre once again sampling Funkadelic (This time being “Funkadelic’s “(Not Just) Knee Deep”).
- Some would say that songs produced by Dre around this time, songs like “Who Am I (What’s My Name)?”, “Deeez Nuuuts”, “G Funk Intro”, and “Can’t C Me”, sound too similar. They do and I’m okay with that.
- Speaking of Dr. Dre, The Chronic was released in December. December 15th, 1992 to be exact.
- “Can’t C Me” is my favorite 2Pac song.
- My second is probably “I Ain’t Mad At Cha (Radio Version)”.
- I only just found out that Tha Dogg Pound originally recorded their version of “Can’t C Me”. The same beat and the same George Clinton ad-libs. I guess everybody on Death Row was all hands on deck when Pac came out of prison. Just like “California Love” was originally a single for a shelved Dr. Dre album.
- Speaking of ad-libs, I don’t think 2Pac gets enough credit for his ad-libbing and shit talking on records. “Can’t C Me” has one of his best with “I dedicate this to you punk motherfuckers!”. I try to use that saying whenever I can fit it in.
- Of course, “That’s why I fucked yo’ bitch, you fat motherfucka!” is the best non-rapping line on a 2Pac song.
- Pac also says “Dr. Dre all day” on “Can’t C Me” too and I feel if Dr. Dre was a new school producer that would be he signature drop. Like Future saying “if Young Metro don’t trust you, I’m gon’ shoot you”.
I think that’s enough rambling. Check out the Song of Week below. Visualize what you can’t see.
