Song of the Week: Kendrick Lamar feat. Jay Rock – “Misunderstood”

6 days. It has only been SIX days since Kendrick Lamar was announced as Super Bowl LIX’s Halftime performer. What I thought was another sore moment for Drake actually turned out to be the start of a chaotic week. Let me remind you:

Tweets, posts, articles and SOOOO many YouTube reaction videos have been released in favor of and opposing the inclusion of Tunechi. So much so that Kung Fu Kenny’s achievement of being the first rapper to solo headline the 13-15 minute concert has been overshadowed. Today, I’m gonna highlight a moment in time when the PG Lang gang leader was able to pay homage and make a name for himself.

Before YSL’s Woody’s buddy released the Barter 6, a young rapper from Compton named his project an official sequel to Tha Carter series. C4 was K.Dot, along with DJ Ill Will and DJ Dave, joyriding over the instrumentals from the monumental Tha Carter III album. It’s eerie how much he can sound, flow, and rap exactly like Lil Wayne. There’s even a cringy Emmitt Till reference years before Wayne made his on Future’s “Karate Chop”. This week, Whitney’s baby daddy even released a song out of nowhere on IG that was misinterpreted and misunderstood. LIGHTBULB! Song of the Week is Kendrick’s rendition of the Nina-Simone closer of the 2008 album. Enjoy “Misunderstood” featuring Jay Rock. Fingers crossed that Eastside Johnny appears in New Orleans and delivers his verse on “Money Trees” along with the chosen performer.

As a bonus, enjoy “Play With Fire.” I always loved the instrumental, but was disappointed with Wayne’s performance on it. I didn’t think Mr. Carter was like MLK then and still don’t think he is now so to hear him compare himself to him takes me out of the song. The second verse is from a song that leaked early called “World of Fantasy.” Then, because of the sample not getting cleared, only the original hard copies and YouTube can you find the song. Enjoy Kendrick’s version and his Super Bowl performance that I will not be watching live because of my ongoing NFL boycott. Go Team!
