Killer Mike – Pl3dge [Review]

By this point, we’re all familiar with Mike Bigga and his legacy. He’s one of the illest rappers that people routinely forget to name when they talk about their faves, and I still don’t know why that is. He’s back with the 3rd in his Pledge Allegiance series and this one is simply titled, Pl3dge. I STILL even at the time of writing this album want to go back and give his last one that extra .5 because of the strength of the first half of the album…but I’ll refrain yet again. Anyway, I’m curious to see if we get that same sort of “filler” material to the back half of this one or if it’s heat from start to finish.

1. So Glourious
Produced by Smiff & Cash
I’ve never been a fan of those routine intro tracks to be honest. I think the first track is your chance to not only set the tone for the album, but with albums being routinely 12 tracks long, you’re giving me one less track with a wasted intro. Bigga takes this chance to kick the door in with “So Glorious.” When I put together my “Best of Killer Mike” album for my iPod, this is the first song, hands down. Want to know who Mike Bigga is, this song is the blueprint to his existence.

2. That’s Life 2
Produced by Smiff & Cash
Just like the first version of this song from the first CD in the series, he calls folks including Cosby, Oprah, Obama, Puffy, Forbes, Jason Whitlock, Religious Zealots, Bishop Long, mega churches, Bill O’Riley, Hannity, Limbaugh, and damn, pretty much everybody that seems to have forgotten what’s real out here.  Just like that first song as well, he’s using this song to take issue those that act under the guise of giving back and taking care of their own, but do so while not even entering the hood. As well, he’s talking about those that teach Jesus’ way while rollin’ in Bentleys and private jets. I could go on and on about who/what he’s taking issue with on this song but I won’t even desecrate this song by trying to post lyrics. This may very well be my favorite Killer Mike song ever, bar none.

3. Ric Flair
Produced by Sweatbox Productions
Brother Jerm asked me if I liked this song before I heard it. I thought he meant another song because of my strategy for listening to this album. I didn’t check any of the features or names of the songs at all. I enjoy Killers music better that way on the first listen. Anyway, I replied that I wasn’t impressed…thinking I heard the song he meant. I was terribly mistaken. THIS “Ric F’lair” lives up to the name. Y’all know I’m a wrestling head and hail Ric Flair as the best to ever do it, so this song gotta be good for me to give it props like that. Complete with some Flair soundbytes and a dope track, this song is ill as hell. The attitude on this song is turn’t all the way up. Essentially, this is audio Scarface.

4. Ready Set Go
Featuring TI; Produced by No I.D.
When I heard this on the Bang 3x mixtape, I was sad because I figured that it wouldn’t be on the album. I love being wrong sometimes. The one on the mixtape is the Remix version (and that is included as well). This version sans Big Boi is still tough as hell.

5. Burn
Produced by Sweatbox Productions
“Burn” is another track in the seemingly endless catalog of Mike Bigga’s call to arms. This is about seeing the inadequacy’s and gaping holes in the philosophy and laws of the country. I can’t do this song any justice, check the lyrics:

“They say love Jesus and listen to your Pastor / but Jesus told the truth and the Pastor’s a lying bastard / all he talk about is economic elevation / and all Jesus talked about was soul salvation / Jesus sat with the sick and he walked with the poor / and if he gave blood for our sins why we givin’ more / I got some gangsta disciples in the church with me tonight / with $5 worth a gas and a matchbook to light / (burn, this mutha’fucka down).”

6. Go Out On The Town
Featuring Young Jeezy; Produced by Raz (of Beat Billionaire)
I wasn’t a fan of this song from the first key played on the track. It sounds like one of the beats you hear all over YouTube or Myspace. I had an aversion to it before even hearing the first part of the chorus or hearing Jeezy on it. Killer does his thing per usual, but I’m not a fan of this song at all…Jeezy being on it is just a coincidence.

7. God In The Building II
Produced by The Beat Bullies
If you read my review on Mike’s last album, then you know “God in the Building” was my fave on that album. As soon as I heard the singing on this track, I knew what this was, no JD. I’m not sure if the song is that dope or if it’s just because of the song it’s following, but either way, this song is literally, music to my ears. The Beat Bullies provide some serious neck break bass and keys (amongst other things) to give a sturdy foundation for Bigga to take us on another ride. Somebody needs to start the Church of Mike Bigga because he’s definitely preachin’ yet again.

8. Players Lullaby
Featuring D the Legend & Twista; Produced by Tha Bizness
This song took a few spins for me to start liking it. The bass hit seems to be a hair early and the track only slightly builds after a minute in, so it just feels off. It does have that UGK southern drawl to it so it entices you to keep listening no matter what your first opinion of it is. As far as the song itself, as we’ve learned, songs that Twista hops on always sound like Twista tracks, so you know what’s going on here without hearing it. It’s a cool song, but doesn’t take move me like other songs on the album do.

9. Animal
Featuring Gucci Mane; Produced by Lil’ Lody & Young Shun
I promise, I was hype on this song (even after hearing Gucci’s call at the beginning) up until the hook. This may be one of the most unfortunate hooks of 2011. If you have a loud system, you may want to turn it down just before the 55sec mark unless you want someone to call Peta. As a proud Gucci hater, I was expecting the worse…but he didn’t do bad on this one. I won’t say it was lyrical at all (…”I’m a dog, you’re a cat / you’re the ball I’m the bat…) but he rode the beat OK. He’s a bit off at the end of his verse, but he doesn’t derail the song…the hook does that for him.

10. American Dream Prelude
Produced by Sweatbox Productions
This intro isn’t phenomenal, but it definitely helped get my hype for the song. “We all say we love Martin Luther King, but we all want to live like Don King, don’t we?” This cat is a poet…and I’m serious. You gotta hear the rest of this. I think we need to start restructuring who we call conscious or at least start a category called conscious thuggary, cause this man is not a game.

11. American Dream
Produced by Sweatbox Productions
Seamlessly after the intro, the verse kicks in and Mike goes on to dissolve any belief that white collar crime is different than the crimes that most folks that look like Hip Hop are locked up for. The differences are largely the product and the color of the “perp”, but the schemes and plans are largely the same. Again, Mike is preaching on this joint over a very soulful track that sounds like it was left over from some blaxploitation movie (I’m sure that’s no accident either.)

12. Everything (Hold You Down)
Produced by Sweatbox Productions
Mike says, “…this song is not about all women, this song is about my woman.” Well, I’ll try and fast forward that part when I play it for my woman because this song works for me too. I don’t know much about Sweatbox Productions, but this album definitely put me on notice. The track is fantastic (I’m officially looking for an instrumental for this). This song talks about spending endlessly on his woman…HIS woman being the difference between trickin’ and taking care of home. A lot of songs out there talk about throwing some stuff at a chick because she’s pretty or to prove that they runnin’ things, this song perfectly illustrates that he wants to spoil his woman because she’s holds him down and has his back. Dedication should be rewarded no?

13. Follow Your Dreams
Produced by DJ Speedy
“Follow Your Dreams” has a great message. I don’t know who’s singing the hook, but I’m not sold and it’s mastered like it was added as an after thought…after it was recorded on a mic with the volume too high. You see the title, so you know what the song is on. It took a few spins for me to really dig this song over the patterned style, but I like it.

14. Swimming
Produced by Flying Lotus
We’re treated to a bit more syrupy slow melody on this one and some more production that I’m not a fan of. This is similar to what happened on his last album. As the album went on, it seems like the quality started to wane and we got fillers. Killer Mike is one of the few dudes that can put out a 10 track album and leave you completely satisfied, I almost want him to try doing that. This song sounds like Castelvania with bass, and I’m not really feeling that. Y’all have heard me talk about sex rap so I’m not really a fan of this one.

15. Ready Set Go (Remix)
Featuring TI& Big Boi; Produced by NO I.D.
This is the version from the mixtape, you’ve heard it and if not, you need to slap yo’self to sleep.

Bottom Line:
I Pledge Allegiance to the Grind parts I and II had the same pitfalls, that being that there is some strong material in the front half, and then an lot of questionable songs after that. This album is similar in that way. Like I said, Mike could easily cut a 10 track album and routinely be mentioned as album of the year. When you take out the Prelude and Remix, you get 13 tracks. Remove 3 and you have damn near a 5star album. Combine the top 7 from this album and the top 7 from the last, and you’d have one of the illest albums released in hip hop, PERIOD. Let’s get focused though, the real thing that separates this album from the last is that even on the lesser songs, they still help construct a complete idea of who Killer Mike is and just how dope he is as a rapper. As I stated earlier, I think it’s time we start mentioning Mike’s name with Common, Talib, Mos Def, and other emcees commonly called conscious. Where they may be the Dr. Martin Luther King’s of this, Mike Bigga is Malcolm X. His methods may be different, but his message is just as relevant and real. Keep sleeping if you want to, but this dude is not a game.

nappyPicks: It would be easier to say what songs to ignore, but even then, I wouldn’t say skip them, they may be your thing. Pick up this album, you won’t be sorry. I promise.

  1. Before I post my comment on the album
Rick Flair is not the best to do it in wrestling even though I stopped watching wrestling about 8 years ago. Undertaker is the best, he had the best gimmick and was just a freak of nature. I do respect your opinion though

Anyways I must check out this album. Killer Mike is very underrated indeed! I don’t get why people like him can’t get that extra push. See thats why I don’t understand why you’re not a 2Pac fan since he rap about the same stuff. If Pac was alive now he would say the same thing just like “Thats Life 2” and probably more to really make people feel him. You know I’m right… I’ll check this out for sho. Great review man! Definitely make me want to listen

    1. Taker? What? Taker wrestles like 3 or 4 times a year and talks even less. Outside of Taker vs HBK 1 and 2, Taker has no memorable matches. Flair is the standard for mic work, storylnes, championships, etc. And I’ve still been watching. Hell, Flair’s retirement match was better than the bulk of Takers career. But aite….lol.

I never said I don’t like Pac, I just think his musical legend is overstated. Like Dub said, dude was better primed to be a legend in leadership rather than musically.

Thanks for the props man, you’ll love this album.

      1. @Saule
You holding Flair up way too high. I mean c’mon man he is good but he Undertaker is just better. He is much faster and like I said his image was just dope as hell. Him and Mankind had one of the best matches. Remember that 1998 Hell In The Cell match. The funeral pallor was dope as hell back in the day as well. Dude gimmick was on point. He had the crowd scared of him back in the 90’s. I remember I was a youngster then and I use to think he was dead for real. Taker memorable lines is “Rest In Peace”. Flair been old since he came out the womb. I’m not dissing him because I liked him too but I just think Undertaker is better along with Bret Hart.

How is Pac music overstated? Man c’mon man like Jay-Z said “Do you listen to the music or skim through it”. Dude was awesome in his time and still the best til this day. When watching his interviews it is still powerful and move you as if he is still alive. We need a Pac right now. Pac had that balance where he could be conscious & Political but he had that rawness to him that made people appeal to him.

For sho man. I’m about to crank up this shit right now and jam away. After listening to some of my old Outkast and Three 6 CDs recently I always wondered what happened to the South? I mean every region had their own sound now everybody sound the damn same. Me and B talked about that a while back. Its kinda sad when you think about. Remember how every region had their own slang and shit now everybody doing the same.

        @King Jerm
Please man you know Undertaker is better. He is your favorite wrestler favorite wrestler…. Dude was tough. I mean I don’t like wrestling no more nor watch it besides to see the women I would love to fuck if they gave me a chance to. But the point is that Undertaker caught my attention as a youngin with the image. He seem like he couldn’t be hurt and I fell for that gimmick. Flair was cool and all but I just like Taker better, and so do you.

        1. I’ll play along….

Flair is listed 4th here, taker 7th. HBK is listed as 1, and I can’t argue with that.
          http://bleacherreport.com/articles/414248-the-top-10-pro-wrestlers-of-all-time/page/8

This list has Flair as 2, Hogan as 1…and as far as wrestling publicity goes, Hogan is the goat. Taker isn’t listed.
          http://listverse.com/2008/10/01/top-10-greatest-professional-wrestlers-of-all-time/

Flair listed as 1 here, taker not listed.
          http://top5lists.net/the-top-5-pro-wrestlers-of-all-time/

These are lists from the first page of a google search. Typically, folks who say Taker is top 5 or 10 only watched WWE. Anyone who remembers NWA, WCCW, WCW, AWA, Wrestling At The Chase, regards Flair as one of the top 3 in the biz, period. You can believe he’s the best all you want, but that shit is false. He’s not even best WWE star ever created, much less the best to ever do it. Not only that, you ain’t even been watching for the past 8 years. Are you counting that terrible Biker gimmick? Outside of the HBK program, I can’t even remember a memorable Taker promo. Flair redefined how people saw wrestling. With the proliferation of wrestling and cable, he helped bring wrestling to prime time, and Hogan made wrestling as big as it is.

As far as Pac goes, you can’t question me “skimming” if you can’t take your head out of his ass to see your own bias fam. LOL, call a spade a spade. I know this is a never ending battle so I won’t even bother, but yeah, I think most folks feel like Dub and I. That Pac was bigger than music and was cut to be a leader, as an emcee, dude was good, I’d even go as far as very good, but his purpose was bigger than records. Great? Not to me.

          1. Man that list is crap. Undertaker was nice mane. He was on most of the old school video game covers like WWF Raw Is War, Wrestlemania The Arcade [I remember playing that in the arcade a long time ago], and so forth. They even have DVDs on the man and definitely is well respected in the wrestling league. You can’t just sit there and shit on Taker like that. Most of the viewers on here probably don’t remember some of those wrestling leagues or even remember when WWE was known as WWF before they really made it more lame like it is today.

Put it like this I watched wrestling until late 02 or early 2003 and thats when I said “Ok enough is enough of this shit”. It started to get lame so now I’m so out of touch with it and don’t even recognize the new wrestlers besides the older ones from the 90’s I remember. I did watch the previous Wrestlemania though but thats about it. Oh yea I did watch that match with Floyd Mayweather since I’m a Boxer too and I have to show support to my fellow fighters. I like fights, real fights not script stuff. Wrestling isn’t for me anymore but it was the shit at one point though. I use to watch WWF Superstars and all that shit back in the G. *Yea that Biker gimmick was terrible I must admit* My problem started after WWF/WCW merged together and it started to become way too much of a soap opera with all the talking.

How can you just trash Undertaker though? You act like the dude suck or something. Must I have to mention he beat up Ric Flair in the early 90’s. He was one of the most popular wrestlers at one point. A lot of people recognized him. He became a superstar quick as soon as he left WCW and then he joined WWF with Ted “Million Dollar Man” team for that match with Koko Beware. As soon as he started to fight Hulk Hogan in 91 he was already a household name and people in the crowd was so shook. I still have that Survivor Series 91, well I got it on my computer now. Kids was crying and shit *Laughs*

Undertaker vs Yokozuna people remember that one! Well not the teenagers but 25 and older remember that shit. Undertaker vs Mankind was dope, Undertaker vs Kane… Of course Undertaker vs HBK. You can’t kill whats already dead Saule. I do give Flair props for bringing wrestling prime time but you can’t act like Undertaker didn’t help contribute to wrestling. Dude is one of the most clever characters in wrestling.

Naw most people feel like Pac is the greatest. The comments I see people write on sites and blogs, dude is much loved. Whats sad is that the kids coming up only know him from them butchered remixed albums that nobody really listen to. I hate how they tarnished his legacy like that *punches wall*. I’m glad somebody else agree with me that 2Pac was bigger than music itself. And I’m glad you admit that he is very good, but I don’t see why he isn’t great. You praise Killer Mike but Pac is way better. His work speak for itself. Deep down inside you like Pac just as much as me. I know you been listening to them mixtapes I made.

            .

          2. I’m bustin’ out the N64 so we can smoke out and yall can play some WWF Wrestlemania 2000 and No Mercy and settle this.
I’ll play San Francisco Rush till’ ya’ll get here…dont forget to bring the good…

        2. Bruh I remember when the Undertaker was Mean Mark Hallus. He used to wrestle with Sid Vicious. They were called the Skyscrapers.

Did you know that he was supposed Paul Bearer and Paul Bearer was supposed to be called the Undertaker? Think about it. The Undertaker is the person that runs the funeral home and the pall bearer is the person that carries the casket. They made a mistake on his first match and they decided that it sounded better that way.

Taker not even in my Top 10 But I can understand why you would like Taker, he’s very popular with the 90’s babies.

          1. Like Jerm said, You’re a 90’s baby, clearly. You’re mentioning games and shit and I’m talking about wrestling. I’m not shitting on taker, but he’s not a top 5 guy, probably not even top 10. He’s the WWE’s version of Goldberg. The gimmick is iron clad, but hell, you can’t have many good matches or stories with someone who is unbeatable. In ring, taker has the same 6 or 7 moves that he’s had for the majority of his career. He doesn’t sell he’s hurt because he’s rarely hurt, and 9/10, his matches aren’t that exciting. Flair has put on CLINICS on how to do a good match. Ironman matches, 2/3 matches, etc. I’m just a realist, and I’ve been watching wrestling my entire life. Flair is one of the top 3 in the TV era of wrestling, bar none. But hey, I made a post in the forum, we can talk about it all day there. This reply thing is about to run out.

Oh, and just because YOU say I like Pac like you doesn’t make it true. lol. And we bosy n all, but I don’t have any of those mixtapes. I don’t own anything after 7day theory and have only heard a few songs from albums after that. I refuse to. lol. I think that was his best album and it’s the best way for him to go out, to me.

          2. Reason why I mentioned the games is because of the fact he was a superstar and most of the superstars appeared on them. Most kids and teenagers then recognized the Taker as a big dog in the game. Even though I watched wrestling back then I mostly watched Boxing and definitely basketball more than I did with Wrestling. Honestly Ric Flair matches aren’t that exciting to me either I mean its okay and all but he is not the greatest. I don’t even see how people put Andre The Giant as the greatest, I mean he was good but only reason why he got where he is at is because he was big as hell.

Whats wrong with being unbeatable… Hey the story line worked. I bet you in the next few years Undertaker will be labeled as a great. Some of these people in the crowd in their 40’s love The Undertaker big time. You can’t say guys in their 20’s just like him. I know some 40 year old dudes who really think Undertaker is the best there ever been in the wrestling ring. When he had that image when he had just the beard and the cult with him, that was cool.

I’ll have to change up my number 1 spot I think Stone Cold is probably the best. The more I think about it Stone Cold had some of the dopest feuds and promos. The Brian Pillsman gun segment was funny as fuck and back then I thought that shit was real. You can’t have no gun being shown on wrestling nowadays, they will probably get fined like a mutha. His matches was exciting especially him and Bret Hart match. His attitude was the shiznit.

I’m surprise you didn’t put Al Snow in your top 10 list.

WHAT!!!!!??? Are you serious man? SMH!! Trust me them albums after his death was a disgrace to the max! I hate how they took off verses or altered the lyrics. Very little songs on them after death albums are in original form [very very little maybe about a song or two]. Trust me them mixtapes I made definitely show you the way Pac made it and how it suppose to sound like. You need to hear “When Thugs Cry” [Original] which was suppose to be on Makaveli, its on one of the mixtapes. If they would have kept the original tracks for Makaveli man that shit would have been a 7/5 rating. Right now I give Makaveli 5/5 but if they would have left Watch Ya Mouth and other songs that got taken off, man man! That would have been the perfect album in hip hop. The production on Makaveli is still the shit til this day. I actually have the original album [not that digital remastered shit]. The digitally remastered versions of death row stuff really sound bad, they made the hi hats too damn loud and everything. Luckily I still have the original copy of Doggfather [The worse Snoop album], and other death row classics.

      1. Shawn Michaels > The Rock > whoever

Flair and Taker are both legends, I Only watched wwe (I’m a 90’s baby as well) so I haven’t seen most of flair’s old matches but I dont think anyone is better than HBK

        1. If you’ve got the regular Netflix account, get the Flair and Four Horsemen DVD’s. It will really open your eyes fam. ESPECIALLY since that was put together by WWE folks, and Vince is notorious for making his folks look better than anyone else.

  2. Killer Mike strikes me as nothing above average. He tries though, I’ll give him that, but there’s nothing stand-out about him at all – average lyrics, average rhyme-scheme, average concepts…etc.

    1. I have to disagree. This album is nice man. I’m letting it ride through and I’m impressed. Killer Mike is better than Average….. C’mon The Watcher you have got to be joking.

      1. I dunno man, try and put him on the same pedestal as POS (and the whole Doomtree collective), Eyedea, Aes Rock, El-P, PackFM, eLZhi or Rob Sonic – they will all devour Mike within seconds. Mike tries, and that’s what I said, you gotta give him credit for it, but as far as skill goes – I don;t see anything spectacular about him at all.

        1. Watcher…I have a proposition for you…put together a mix of them artists..write something up…and we will post it.

Cause I got Killer over all them dudes. Maybe I’m biased.

  3. Thank you!! Killer Mike is one of the nicest out. Point. Black. Period. The beginning of pledge allegiance to the grind II was flawless, I just wish the album didn’t tail off at the end like it did, would have been a certifiable classic, this album got him closer to a classic, and I know he’s going to do it the next time around.

  4. Well I’m so happy to see Mike back at it… I’ve waited a very long time for this cd….As many above

  5. Well I’m so happy to see Mike back at it… I’ve waited a very long time for this cd….As many above may say he is under rated big time. Love the CD….. God in the building 2………That track needs to grow on me due to the fact part one is my theme /fav song….Not sure if part two should have come out, but my dude is loved anyway…. Enjoy one of the REALEST rappers out there….. Keeping real music alive!

  6. I don’t know why y’all got into a wrestling debate when there’s a damn good Killer Mike album to talk about. Just copped this today, and a few tracks in it’s giving Pledge II a run for it’s money, but like you said Killer Mike is known to start strong (even thought I thought except for a few tracks the last half of II was ill).

This dude just goes hard as hell, tellin the truth with no need to hide his message in metaphors but still able to show his lyrical prowess is on point. One of the more underappreciated rappers for the last half decade or so. Great review homie.

P.S. Ric Flair will never be touched pound for pound.

    1. much love fam for the comment (and the tweet)!

Everybody on the staff here at the Fro are huge Mike fans. if you could pass SW’s review on to Mike himself that’d be really dope. we’d love him to know we’re steady biggin’ him up at every favorable juncture of circumstances =)

i’m checkin out your site right now. I’m gonna get some of those mixtapes for sure…*downloads Anger & Ambition*

        1. well yeah, Twitter is one thing, but Trackstar (who is ill btw, errbody click that link to his site) knows him personally. A real mention to Mike might end us up with a interview or something dope like that. you never know.

Thats still dope tho that Mike mightve already read it. do y’all write reviews with the idea in mind that the artist might actually read it? the internet is a trip these days, lol

          1. That’s the plan homie. I’m waitin on him to get me the audio so I can blend it all in but yeah, shole is.

          2. thats über-dope fam. is he gunna say “nappyafro.com” at some point? cause that drop would get overused like a motherfucker on the next Frocast, lol

I can just see Easy hittin the drop like Flex hits the bomb noise (“DROP THAT BOMB!! TURN THAT BOMB OFF!!”)

    2. Thanks Trackstar! That’s definitely appreciated….and I see that STL in the avy, my hometown.

  7. My bad hadn’t checked back in a couple days…

@Saule word! I lived there from 99-09, it’s where I came up as a DJ and I always rep it…

Thanks for checking the site out, glad you like @Verbose

I’ll try to mention the review to him next time I talk to him…

Ya’ll got a submission e-mail or something, where I can send mixes as I drop em? I drop a lot of different mixes here and there, I’d love to hear your thoughts if you do get a chance to listen…
