DJ LP’s Sound Session: Royce Da 5’9″ – “Second Place”

This is a World Premier

Right off the back we are blessed with another Premier beat. If you’ve followed Royce Da 5’9″ through most of his career or even just look up some of his best tracks then you would find that some of his best work comes over a Premier beat (“Boom”, “Shake This”, & “Hood Love” just to name a few). This track, “Second Place” off Royce’s upcoming album Success Is Certain, is no exception. Premo samples Method Man and Raekwon for some of the hook and continues to prove why he is the best producer in Hip-Hop history for those of us that love that NY Sound.

With Royce the flow is always there. Lyrically he drops in and gives us a nice 3 verses making it very clear on the track that he considers himself the 2nd best and might as well “run backwards so he can see what 2nd place looks like”. He also addresses that 1st place belongs to Eminem. Of course right away you might think he is always mentioning Em but he right away addresses that before the 1st hook

‘Why that nigga gotta bring Em name up all the time?’
Man, You wouldn’t even be rich without that nigga!
Shut up faggot!”

After an impressive lyrical showing on the Bad Meets Evil album (Let’s be honest, we all knew Royce was capable of that showing when he is focused, he killed Em on “Fast Lane”) Royce plans on releasing his next album Success is Certain in July. Looking at the work put in over the past years (Street Hop, the Slaughterhouse album, Bar Exam 3 and Hell: The Sequel) we should expect nothing but another great solo release from Royce Da 5’9”
