After putting music on hold to star in the Oscar-nominated, Hidden Figures and star in the Academy-award winning Best Picture, Moonlight both in 2016, Janelle Monae leaves La La Land and announces her return in the form of Dirty Computer. The reception from fans has been high as the views for her first two singles, “Make Me Feel” and “Django Jane” are already in the millions.
I don’t know if it’s more frustrating being a fan of art or the artist. I watched both videos this week after folks have already given their quick, short reviews: “Janelle is rapping on ‘Django Jane'” and “Janelle is bisexual, she told us on ‘Make Me Feel'”. These songs and videos are way more complex than “Look at her butt and her body language with Tessa Thompson definitely means they’re dating“. As a protege and friend of Prince, who worked on the album before his crossover from this world, you can hear in the influence of “Kiss” on”Make Me Feel,” I’m sure the Wondaland Records CEO would want her art to be more than hot takes. Watch and interpret with a bigger scope. Her long-awaited 3rd album (and its accompanying film), Dirty Computer will be released on April 27th. Enjoy!
