Seeing how much I like Childish Gambino‘s album Camp, it was one of my favorite albums of 2011, it seems weird that I haven’t really liked any of his more recent stuff (“Fuck You Blog”, “Eat Your Vegetables”, & “Unnecessary”). They’re not terrible songs and I salute Donald for going with a harder sound, but to me those tracks felt kinda hollow.
What’s different about his newest song “We Ain’t Them”? For one I actually like it; it actually feels like it could be a bonus track on Camp. It also shows that Childish Gambino is best when he sticks to his guns, speaks from the heart, and raps over well produced tracks.
I’m sure a mixtape is on the horizon (I think I heard him say so on 106 & Park or something) but I’m curious what Childish Gambino has coming up next.
