My Issue With Kanye West

My Issue With Kanye West

Kanye West is undoubtedly one of the best emcees to emerge out of the mid 2000’s. When he first came out he was your average everyday cat who could create amazing beats and rhymes that made you think. He was socially conscious, he was comedic, he was controversial, but he was us.

Kanye’s first four albums were the voice of the people. Even with 808’s & Heartbreak he seemed to be the voice of every young black man who didn’t want to be a thug or a hustler. We watched his confidence turn to arrogance, but couldn’t deny that we would do the same. He had become annoying but not overly annoying.

Let us jump to today. He is fresh off of dropping his latest album, Yeezus. This album has sparked an interesting debate between Hip-Hop fans. Some feel that he has dropped an amazing which pushes the bounds of creativity for future albums for rappers. The majority of people feel that he just dropped a, how can I say this, boo boo album.

I am apart of the majority. I am disappointed in Ye as an artist. He was once this guy who could rhyme okay, but he had a message with his music. I still listen to College Dropout and Late Registration and wonder what the current Kanye could do if he attempted to create these bodies of work. I’m done with the excuses for Ye. He gave him passes after his mom passed and his fiancé bolted, but what excuse does he have now? He should be happy. He has done an album with the greatest rapper of all time (Jay-Z), he has one of the hottest women on TV (Even if everyone and they pops has had her), and he has sold more albums than most artists in the game today.

It’s time to get your act together Ye. I’m tired of this watered down bullshit. Come hard or stay off the mic! Even your production has been weak lately. If Wayne has fallen off, you are falling. I hope you can catch yourself.

  1. Nice article, DuB. I’m one of those people that thinks Yeezus is not up too par lyrically, I didn’t understand why majority of the songs featured him in the club or sad about a girl when his life is in a completely different place. I also think that just because some of the production is different does not mean it’s good. Kanye West could do no wrong in my eyes, but now with this album, he’s made his first mistake with me.

    1. I agree, never really liked his MCing compared to his production skills. Then again, he does bite a lot of material beat wise too. However, he’s still a very talented artist with a impressive discography. I just feel like he’s falling off lately, and all of his idiotic rants is only proving that.

  2. Great article. You were on point with everything about Kanye from then to now. Ye definitely needs to either get it together or fall back.

  3. Wholeheartedly disagree. Kanye’s album is definitely one of the most creative and interesting one’s to drop in some time. Your right, the majority of people DID hate Kanye’s album when it first dropped. But now a month later, that opinion has shifted. I’ve seen many more people admit that they enjoy the album after they’ve given it more spins and let it settle (some even ranked it higher than College Dropout and 808s). Which is why Yeezus is critically acclaimed, while MCHG, Born Sinner, and The Gifted all being ranked lower (with MCHG being the lowest of them).

Kanye’s growth as an artist is interesting, and Kanye still totes the most consistently great discog in Rap (with Outkast being the only others). Although it’ll be hard to top My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy (Top 5 greatest Rap album ever) I want to see Kanye continue to do his thing. He doesn’t need to fall back, he needs to keep going. Because he drops classic, after classic.

  4. Dub I feel for you but Kanye isnt changing or going anywhere at all just listen to what Inspector said about those 4 rap albums, As a hip-hop community we’ve either loved Born Sinner or MCHG or maybe both but critically (USA Today, Pitchfork, Rolling Stones) all have those albums far behind Yeezus. There’s a reason Kanye wears high fashion and complains about Award “snubs’ cause those are the kinds of people he’s trying to impress. Sorry but you may have to deal with listening to Registration to hear a Kanye you love, as I will.

  5. Kanye is lost bruh. I use to be a big fan of his years ago but he really lost his marbles… IDK what else to say about Yeezy
