Root For The Villain: Rap, Bull$hit, and a Celebration of Failure by J-Zone
Release Date: November 16, 2011 ~ 206 Pages
As a Hip-Hop head (who also runs a site devoted to Hip-Hop) one of the questions I’ve asked myself sometimes is “How is J-Kwon eating these days?”. Yeah, the question of how a marginally successful rapper survives after that success subsides is something I’ve questioned many times and J-Zone’s Root For The Villain: Rap, Bull$hit, and a Celebration of Failure helps answer that question.
To be honest, I never really listened to J-Zone when he was really active in the music scene, but this book made me want to go back and give it a listen. To hear as honest tale of going from a working musician to regular 9 to 5 is real as it can get. Plus you can relate to J-Zone on such topics as online dating and the messed up job market. In a world where most rappers fake a lot of shit, it’s refreshing to hear one speak so candidly.
Notable Moment: Not really in the book, but after 9 years J-Zone actually did eventually return to music.
Should you read it?: Yea. Why not?
