Maiouna Youssef aka Mumu Fresh is possibly one of the illest talents you’re sleeping on. You may have first heard her voice back on The Roots “Don’t Feel Right” track on the Game Theory album. Living in the DMV, one of my boys put me up on her Black Magic Woman: The EP a few years back and just a week ago, Jerm put me on to one of her latest offerings making the rounds. When I got the email that her new project was out, of course I checked it out based on how impressed I was with her previous efforts. She doesn’t disappoint.
The Reintroduction of Mumu Fresh is essentially a mixtape full of her remaking and putting her Mumu Fresh swing on songs you’re familiar with. One of my favorites is “Nappy”, a fun, playful and proud song about embracing your natural hair, made to the tune of Pharrell’s megahit “Happy”. Don’t let the cover fool you either, MuMu isn’t some Neo Soul styled singer. She’s actually more Emcee and poet than anything else and she can flow. Give it a shot, it’s donation based and you can put WHATEVER YOU WANT as your donation amount…it’s definitely worth the purchase for a 20 track album.
