Recently De La Soul launched a successful KickStarter to fund their new album. Well, I guess saying “successful” is an understatement because at the moment they have raised over $450,000. I love that because seeing a veteran Hip-Hop group being able to garner this kind of support is a great thing.
It also makes me kinda sad because the last time I bought any De La Soul music was in 1996 with their 4th album Stakes Is High. Now I’m not here to talk about that album, but I do want to point out how dope that album was/is (I may need to dust off the Classic Material column to talk about it more. But now it might be too confusing).
“Stakes Is High” the song is also pretty dope and it’s something I refer to a lot (And the reason for this post). Whenever I’m playing cards or walking into a courtroom or doing anything where I feel it involves chance, that song plays in my head. Add to the fact that J Dilla produced it and the video was well made (What’s up Jerry Stackhouse & Maury Povich?), “Stakes Is High” is great pick for Song of the Week.
