Soul Sunday: Leon Bridges – ‘Coming Home’ [Music Video, Album, & Mixtape]

I’m going to use my late pass here. A few weeks ago, I found this project on Audiomack. Never heard of Leon Bridges or MICK before, but the purple cover was intriguing. The project featured a soul singer over remixed instrumentals from Geto Boys, UGK, Slim Thug, Big Tuck, and any other rapper from Texas that ever held a styrofoam cup. After some research, I learned that ‘Coming Home To Texas’ is not the original project. MICK, formerly known as DJ Mick Boogie, along with producers Chi Duly, Hasan Insane, Donnie Houston, Jett I. Masstyr, Chris Rockaway, and TedyP bring the Texas Hip-Hop sound to new territory. Bridges’ debut project, ‘Coming Home’ is a collage of retro 60’s throwback music that I would hear on AM stations on my way to church on Sundays. While I prefer the version of “Brown Skin Girl” mixed with “3 Kings,” there is no denying the talent that comes from the speakers when either version of the album’s closer, “The River,” plays.

(S/O to T-Pain and The Internet; Because of them I found out about NPR Music’s Tiny Desk Concerts where artists perform live acoustic versions of their songs and sound amazing.)

Coming Home‘ is available now and Bridges is on tour.
