October 13th
Before I Fall was released earlier this year, but I didn’t get a chance to see it in theaters. The plot is a high-school senior relives her last day alive over and over a la the classic Bill-Murray comedy, Groundhog Day. Even though the narrative structure of a time loop has been used before in other thrillers and dramas, I thought the setting was unique even though it did give a YA novel tone. Gasp! It is based on a novel.
On Friday the 13th, the less serious toned, Happy Death Day! (2nd film on this list with an exclamation mark) will be in theaters. The premise is a college student relives her birthday repeatedly, each day ending with her futile attempts to survive and being murdered before finding the identity of her masked killer. Every time I watch the trailer, I check the calendar again to see if it’s October yet. I’m excited about this film the most.
