VOL. 89: SNOW BUSINESS VS. PASTA BUSINESS

Note: This is the web version of the nappyafro Newsletter, which usually goes out by email. We’re posting it on the site this time just to switch things up (probably just this once twice). The newsletter in it’s original format is here and if you haven’t already, you can subscribe to the newsletter right here.

REVIEW: LET GOD SORT EM OUT

Can two (basically) 50-year-old rappers who haven’t dropped a group album in almost 15 years come back with something worth hearing? Yes. Yes they can. Clipse return with Let God Sort Em Out, and MTHFKA JONES reviewed it and loved it. Check out the review.

REVIEW: ALFREDO 2

Yours truly dusted off the review keyboard (okay, it’s just my regular keyboard) and went in on Alfredo 2. As much as I liked it, writing the review made me realize I probably should have given Alfredo 1 five stars back in the day. Still, Alfredo 2 is my personal Album of the Year (so far). Check out the review.

RECOMMENDATIONS

It’s been a while. Here’s some recommendations.

MOVIE:

Freaky Tales (2024): A weird, cool movie that feels like if Quentin Tarantino grew up in Oakland. Come for Pedro Pascal, stay to see Sleepy Floyd use supernatural martial arts skills to kill Nazis. (Yes, you read that right.)

TV SHOW:

King of the Hill (1997-): The Hill family is back, and thankfully, the show is still good. King of the Hill has always been one of my “comfort shows,” the kind I throw on before bed (terrible sleep habit, I know).

VIDEO GAME:

Eastward: Octopia (2021/2024): I played the hell out of Eastward when it dropped on Switch in 2021. The new DLC, Octopia (released in 2024), isn’t an RPG but a cozy life-sim with farming, cooking, and inviting people over for dinner. After 20+ hours, I liked it way more than I expected. Makes me wonder, should I have just been playing Stardew Valley this whole time?

READING:

Ice Cream Man (2018-): After watching the new Superman movie (which was solid, but you already know about that one), I wanted to read some Superman comics. That led me to Superman: The Kryptonite Spectrum, which in turn led me to the same team’s series Ice Cream Man. It’s a dark comedy horror anthology that feels like Creepshow, which I was big on back in the day (shoutout Creepshow 2 specifically).
