Beyonce’s Homecoming special on Netflix reminded me of a documentary that I was anticipating on PBS but never watched. Stanley Nelson’s Tell Them We Are Rising: The Story of Black Colleges and Universities was released in 2017 and tells the development of educational institutions for the grandsons and granddaughters of former slaves and the relevance and importance for the ancestors of slaves and contemporary pop culture and society.
I first became aware of the prolific documentarian, after viewing his behind the scenes approach to one of the most feared, respected, and misunderstood social parties of all time with 2015’s The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution, currently on Netflix. The Firelight Media founder has a new documentary on the humble beginnings of Black entrepreneurship coming later this month.
BOSS: The Black Experience in Business premieres on PBS, April 23rd.
