Song of the Week: Scarface feat. UGK – “They Down With Us”

I didn’t initially have a Song of the Week, but then I remembered that I am currently reading Sweet Jones: Pimp C’s Trill Life Story (a good book but probably unnecessarily long). Because of this, I have also been listening to a lot of UGK, and a particular song came up in my iTunes Music app: Scarface‘s “They Down With Us” featuring UGK. There’s something captivating about hearing super southern rappers over a track like Boogie Down Productions’s “I’m Still #1,” especially when you consider the historical context of southern rappers feeling disrespected by up north rappers back in the day. (I won’t delve into that here.)

Returning to Sweet Jones: Pimp C’s Trill Life Story, there is part of the book that covers how much Pimp C loved and was inspired by Run DMC. It was cool to hear him rap “Pimp and Bun like DMC and DJ Run.” Of course, this was before he felt disrespected by New York rappers and stopped referring to his music as Country Rap Tunes instead of Hip-Hop.

Either way, check out the Song of the Week below, and remember, we’re #1.
