Here we go again. Instead of the crew submitting a few tracks that are in their current rotation, in this edition the theme is summertime. So here are a some songs that should be added to you barbecue playlists. Also this week the homie Verbose is feeling in for SBK (Who will catch it on the next go around) – B-Easy
“Summertime” – DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince
Album: Homebase; Producers: Hula, K.Fingers, & Roland Edison
The summer anthem. Period.“Daylight” – Brother Ali
Album: The Undisputed Truth; Producer: Ant
“They ask me if I’m black or white…” This song will answer a few questions that people had about Ali last year.
“It seem like no one want to hear the truth”“Sunshine” – Atmosphere
Album: Sad Clown Bad Summer 9; Producer: Ant
This will make anyone’s morning (or afternoon) go a little better after a long night of drinking
“Never Leave Me Alone” – Nate Dogg feat. Snoop Dogg & Val Young
Album: G-Funk Classics, Vol. 1: Ghetto Preacher; Producer: Kurupt
This song just feels like summer to me. Something about G-funk music ALWAYS feels like summertime.“Do Over” – Ghostface Killah feat. Raheem Devaughn
Album: Ghostdini: Wizard Of Poetry In Emerald City; Producer: Mahogany
Folks always break up at the beginning of summer and try and reconcile at the end, this song is the end of the summer song. However, it’s no less of a windows open, radio blasting, summer song.“Past My Shades” – B.o.B. feat. Lupe Fiasco
Album: B.o.B Presents: The Adventures Of Bobby Ray; Producer: Crada
This is one of the dopest “I’m the shit” songs I’ve heard recently. It’s damn near my anthem lately.
“Fireworks” – Drake feat. Alicia Keys
Album: Thank Me Later; Produced by 40, Boi-1da, & Crada
I played this song on July 4th on my way to check out the festivities. It’s a laid-back, kind of dark beat that Drake flows over and Alicia’s singing really makes this cut what it is. It’s the kind of song that you just have to play on Independence Day and also one of those songs you better have playing during the summer.“Paid in Full” – Eric B. & Rakim
Album: Paid In Full; Producers: Eric B. & Rakim
This is a tune suitable for anytime of year, but I put it in my summer mix for a reason; it’s all about getting money. All my fellow students can sympathize with me on this one; every summer we get out of school, and what’s the first thing we want to do? Party. But after that, we find our pockets are empty; we dig deeper, but we keep coming up with lint! We gotta go out and get paid in full! Not to mention this is one of the best Hip-Hop songs ever created.“Punch Drunk Love” – Common feat. Kanye West
Album: Universal Mind Control; Producer: The Neptunes
You just gotta love this song. With summer comes romance, and that’s what this song is all about. Common flows effortlessly over another Neptunes summer hit. Pharrell on the uncredited sample is infectious, while Ye adds to hook to make this song a catchy summer tune.
Verbose
“Get Throwed” (Screwed and Chopped) – Bun B feat. Pimp C, Z-RO, Young Jeezy & Jay-Z
Album: Trill; Producer: Mr.Lee
This is a song I can listen to over and over, even now, years after it first came out.
Nothing says summer to me more than Screwed & Chopped music, I can remember many a summer in Houston, layin’ by the apartment pool or riding to a BBQ, bumping Swishahouse or whatever. In Texas its so commonplace, even old people like it, but outside The South, people haven’t heard Screwed and Chopped music, so this is always the introduction I play for them. If you don’t like this shit, you’ll never like S+C music.“25 Lighters” – DJ DMD feat. Fat Pat & Lil’ Keke
Album : Twenty-Two P.A. World Wide; Producer: DJ DMD
First off, R.I.P to Fat Pat. This song was SO huge when I was back in H-Town, but I dunno who else has ever heard it outside of TX. I just close my eyes and smile when I hear this, remembering all those times it came on the radio on the porch and everybody sang along. I’ve heard it a million times, and I’m still not quite sure what “25 Lighters” means. I can only guess hes so rich he needs 25 of everything, including lighters.“Plastic Cups” – Rapper Big Pooh feat. Joe Scudda & Chaundon
Album: N/A; Producer: J-Dilla (R.I.P.)
These cats are rhyming over Dilla Dog’s “Gobstopper”, and I’m sure Dilla would’ve loved what they did with it.
What’s more summer than cookouts and family reunions with plastic cups? nothing, thats what.
If this track doesn’t make your head nod, you’re at the wrong site son.
“Ruff Ryders’ Anthem” – DMX
Album: It’s Dark And Hell Is Hot; Producer: Swizz Beatz
This just remind me of the summer whenever I hear this song. It also reminds me of guys yelling and standing on abandoned school buses. But mostly summer.“Big Pimpin” – Jay-Z feat. UGK
Album: Vol. 3… Life And Times Of S. Carter; Producer: Timbaland
If the song didn’t speak summer, the music video did.“Get Low” – Lil’ Jon & the East Side Boyz feat. Ying Yang Twins
Album: Kings Of Crunk; Producer: Lil’ Jon
For anybody who doesn’t think this song belongs here, I got six words for you: “To the windowwwww to the walllllllllll!”.
“Temperature’s Rising” – Mobb Deep feat. Crystal Johnson
Album: The Infamous; Producers: Q-Tip & Mobb Deep
With the word temperature in the title, you know it’s a track for hot weather. This track as well as the rest of the tracks off The Infamous were the soundtrack to my summer of 1995.“Sweatin’ Out Weaves” – Wale feat. UCB
Mixtape: Back To The Feature
DMV stand up! This track will have all the girls (wait for it…) sweatin’ out weaves. Sorry.“Deeez Nuuuts” – Dre. Dre feat. Dat Nigga Daz, Snoop Dogg, Nate Dogg, & Warren G
Album: The Chronic; Producer: Dr. Dre
I could have picked “Nuthin’ But A ‘G’ Thang” but “Deeez Nuuuts” gets the nod because I imitated the phone call that appeared on this song’s intro like crazy back in the day. Do you wanna know what other song I’d like to talk about right now? DEEEZ NUUUTS!
