FROCAST: Episode #52

If you follow either myself (@saulewright) or the fro (@nappyafro) on twitter use #frocast for the topic. Let’s make this a trending topic fronation.

I think we’ve had a lot of good and fun episodes, and this was was pretty solid…and then we read the RNQ question that came in…wow. Before we got there we talked about some terrible casting decisions in Hollywood and we got serious for a little bit..but once we got to the question from Anonymous….this fucking show took off. It’s a long one, we can’t help it. Get your old folks seat doughnut and some comfy headphones, it’s about to go down once again. And Anonymous, you’ll recognize your question…PLEASE keep us updated on this one. You and Sinister are fighting for livest RNQ ever. And that matters, we’re giving out an award for nation members this year, yeah, I said it.

Also, if you’re not near a computer and just want to stream the show from your phone, you can download the Stitcher app, search “nappyafro” or “frocast” and stream episodes through your phone. If you’re having trouble finding older episodes, you can go straight to www.frocast.com for the archives.

Wanna submit a drop or be a guest on the show or advertise on a frocast, go here and put FROCAST as the subject.

  1. I really hope to hear y’all chime in on where Nash and Tim Duncan rank, your NBA picks (NBA Preview article in the works, stay tuned) and the RNQ this week.

    1. …AND Harden made a choice that amounted to an additional 24M with no additional years than he would get in OKC PLUS he put up 37pts…sounds like he made the right choice. -I know, it’s early…but 80M over 5 is already a win.

  2. Great Frocast like always. I feel like as far as Zoe Saldana/Nina Simone goes, I’m a bit iffy on it. I mean, I understand why people get upset at these things because of how frequently this country portrays darkskin as ugly and light as beautiful. However, I do notice a bit of double standard that black people have when it comes to skin color in Hollywood. Nobody complains when a darkskin actor portrays a lighter skinned person (outside of the Flex/Michael Jackson, but that was because that shit was horrible). But switch the roles and all hell breaks loose. For instance:

    – The character Will Smith character plays in Men In Black (Agent J) is actually white in the books.
    – The character The Rock played in Gridiron Gang, was white in real life.
    – The black chick from True Blood is also supposed to be white.
    – Angela Bassett was noticeably darker than Tina Turner.

Yet, there’s no outrage. But the minute someone light gets cast in the role of someone dark…well…

    1. Thanks for the comment bruh. I think there are 3 reasons that those issues weren’t major. 1) Those books weren’t as popular then? (I’m speculating because I didn’t even know they were books until you said that. I never heard anyone mention them as books either…even B-Easy, and he’s a movie guru). 2) You got actors of great quality to play those roles. 3) They weren’t wearing blackface and prosthesis NOR was the character they were playing fighting against the very look of the person playing the role. Nina dealt a lot with her being inferior because of her black features. Zoe is definitely a more European standard of beauty…something that Nina had to fight her entire career. To have Zoe play that role AND blackface it up, that’s terrible. imo of course.

    2. I think the outrage also stems from the fact that having Zoe play the role completely undermines darker skinned actresses who could have played the role more naturally. Like Saule said, if you have to use blackface (which is horrible in itself whether it’s blacks or whites doing it) and prosthetics is a slap in the face. I also think it speaks to white America’s( and to an fair extent black America, as we have internalized color complex) discomfort with seeing dark skin in entertainment.

  3. Another great and crazy episode of the frocast. That’s fucked up about GQ Blu wearing that suit as James Bond, and nobody knew who he was. Funny, but fucked up. That’s crazy about Saule being in a haunted house with a church group, and cursing after someone swung a knife at them/him. Saule said it best about halloween being the most racist holiday. Also, King Jerm made a valid point when he said that halloween is another for women to dress like sluts. Maybe some women, but not all. That was some crazy shit when Kevin Garnett dissed/ignored Ray Allen’s peace offering at the Celtics/Heat game. King Jerm definitely went in talking about Kevin Garnett, and made valid points while talking about K.G. Of course, I knew Miami was going win against Boston, but how in da fuck the Lakers lose to the Mavericks? I wouldn’t be suprised, sooner/later, if Mike Brown gets fired, and Phil Jackson comes back to be the Lakers coach. The James Harden trade was one thing I did not see coming. We’ll see how it’ll turn out for the Houston Rockets. Why is Shaq still going at Dwight Howard for? To me, he just making himself look more stupid in this situation. I said it once and I’ll say it again, despite the ratings of Kendrick Lamar’s album and Nas’s album, IMO, both of those albums are some the best stuff to come out this year. I’m kind of skeptical about how Rakim will sound on some Pharrell beats, but we’ll see how it’ll turn out. How did Zoe Saldana get the role to play Nina Simone in a biopic? I mean, really, how did she get the role? And the Real Nigga Quotes segment was just…..WOW!!! Funny, crazy and all, but….WOW!!! I don’t know which one was more crazy, the RNQ for this week or RNS for last week.

  4. First off, I been a loyal lurker(lol) and FROCAST listener since the beginning of the year. Y’all some funny ass dudes and I have enjoyed listenin to Frocast every Thursday. BUT BRUH!, don’t ever let GQ talk about NFL football again after what he said about the Falcons. How the hell is an undefeated team not for real? This aint college where you got teams you know aint got a chance in hell of winning a game. In the NFL, it’s ANY GIVEN SUNDAY for a reason. Every team has talent but not every team knows how to use it every week. And don’t act like the Falcons aint been building to this point the last 4 years. I been a Falcons fan since birth and we been thru a lot of shitty years and I will admit that the last couple playoffs I didn’t think those teams were ready. But anybody in they right mind can see that this Falcons team is legit. Not cause they record but because they find a way to win close games and they play like they tryin to make it to the Super Bowl and not just the playoffs. One game at a time shawty!. . . Oh and no offense but kill yoself for comparing Julio, Roddy, and Tony to Jennings, Nelson, and Cobb. I hope that was a joke… *rant over*

    1. So y’all went 14-2 in 98 and lost in the Super Bowl, and y’all went 13-3 when y’all lost AT HOME to that one team… Plus Jennings and Cobb have more TDs than Roddy or Julio in the same number of receptions, only reason they dont have the yards is b/c Rodge passes to EVERYBODY. We havent even needed Jennings this year he been hurt, James Jones is a beast. Y’all aint seeing the Pack bruh.
