6. Ka – The Night’s Gambit
Released: July 13, 2013 [Iron Works]
Ka released 2013’s deepest lyrical album with The Night’s Gambit. This record takes us into the mind of Ka and his chess match with life. It features emotions of concern, anxiety, betrayal and guilt as Ka tactically battles life similar to a game of chess. What makes it great is how the album is delivered. Ka’s monotone flow meshes brilliantly with the still-haunting beats. It feels like you’re in a never-ending nightmare and you can’t get out. It may just be me, but this album reminded me of The Seventh Seal film. Its dark, set on a game of chess, and gives you the feeling of entrapment.
