Watch The Trailer For Aaron McGruder’s ‘Black Jesus’

Black Jesus Front

We’ve documented the mostly mediocre 4th season of The Boondocks (If you haven’t, check out Short-T’s great article Leaving The Dock: Farewell To The Boondocks). The general thought about the reason for the last season being so bad is because it’s creator, Aaron McGruder, was not apart of it. What we really haven’t discussed is what the show he was working on for Adult Swim instead of The Boondocks: Black Jesus. Now that I’ve seen the trailer, it might have been worth it. Black Jesus looks like comedy gold and an episode of The Boondocks come to life. Oh happy day. Premieres August 7th.

Black Jesus is a half hour live-action scripted comedy series on Adult Swim from Peabody award-winning creator Aaron McGruder (The Boondocks, Red Tails) and Mike Clattenburg (Trailer Park Boys). The series finds Jesus living in present day Compton, CA on a daily mission to spread love and kindness throughout the neighborhood with the help of his small but loyal group of downtrodden followers.

  1. I’m gonna try and wait this one out. I’m lost so far. I don’t see it as being funny. Feels like a joke from a comedians act…and they dragged it out into a show. If folks are mad about Tyler Perry and call that coonin’ what are they callin’ this?

    1. This kind of humor is way different from Tyler Perry. Black Jesus seems like something that would have been on The Boondocks but just an extended take on it. This is right down Adult Swim’s lane too.

When people get mad at this show it won’t be because this show is an example of what Hollywood thinks all Black America wants to see (A problem that some people have with Tyler Perry’s movie beside most of them being just bad), they’ll get mad because of the portrayal of Jesus. Personally I don’t give a shit but you know…

      1. I get what you’re saying but Jesus blessings his niggas with 40s has gotta be considered cooking by some if Mr. brown is considered cooking by most, no?

        1. It depends on how you look at it. Black Jesus is basically fantasy. Mr. Brown & Meet The Browns is portraying a regular family with an over the top character. It’s also not funny and terribly written. If Meet The Browns was good, I don’t think it would get as much hate.

  2. hmm..not convinced by this trailer so far..as far as the tyler perry comparisons..this is obviously satire..remains to be seen whether or not it’s good satire..but i mean if you don’t get that..sheesh

  3. I’m not really seeing the “cooning” you guys are talking about, this just looks like a show about how Jesus would be perceived in the hood today by people who don’t really know him.

I’m just curious as to why Aaron McGruder left the Boondocks just to work on another show for AS..
