Part 1 of the Kanye West documentary Jeen-Yuhs: A Kanye Trilogy dropped yesterday on Netflix. And while Ye initially complained about getting “final cut” on the project, it was a good watch (He also wanted Drake to narrate the documentary… for some reason). Jeen-Yuhs features intimate footage of the Chicago rapper’s come up when he was trying to break into the music business. I have heard the docu-series referred to as “a Love Letter to the Old Kanye” and (so far) that is exactly what is it.
That brings us to our Song of the Week. In Part 1 of Jeen-Yuhs, Kanye finally gets signed to by Roc-a-Fella, he announced that his single would feature Mos Def, Freeway, and the Harlem Boys Choir. When I heard that I was like, “Man, I wonder what that song was?”. My dumb ass forgot it was “Two Words”. Matter of fact, the documentary even shows Mos and Yeezy rapping their verses backstage before the signing.
This was all before Kanye had that infamous car crash that almost killed him (Which is supposed to be featured in Part 2 of Jeen-Yuhs). That crash lead to the creation of “Through The Wire”, which lead to that song being the first single off The College Dropout. To bring this whole thing full circle, the footage used to make the music video for “Through The Wire” was a small sample of the same footage used to make Jeen-Yuhs.
