E! True nappyafro.com Story

Three hundred and sixty-five days…that is a year for some of you short bus riders, but seriously, a year flies by pretty fast. Well on this day in 2007 nappyafro.com hit the internet with a whopping 36 hits, probably all family but the boys were excited! We started out with five guys B-Easy, King Jerm, Blood, Kuntry K, and Slick P. Our idea was to be strictly a review site; music, games, clothes, technology, and porn. Did I say porn? Yeah, I did, and we will get to that later. The fashion idea didn’t last long because Kuntry K resigned to pursue his dream of being a designer by being on that show Project Runway. I think he done pretty good, because we haven’t heard from dude since. Not soon after Blood got tired of the monotony of his life and decided to do something he always wanted to do, PORN! Who knew that Blood would become a famous porn star? If you don’t remember his profile info here it is: “He had a porn collection that will make Kirk Franklin lean back!” We were down to three guys and it we were up to our necks with work and no one to do it. B-Easy’s cousin Canis Canem reached out and lent a needed hand, along with Dark Angel, the lone female of the group. Not too soon after joining, Canis joined the military and is in Iraq now. Dark Angel went on a Ricky Williams sabbatical and is hiking in Australia. Jerm thinks that they ran off together, but hey, what does he know? The most shocking thing happened when Slick P quit because he felt like he wasn’t getting credited for the work he did. He worked like Jay-Z in the Def Jam offices! So that left Easy and Jerm to holding the bag, funny because that is how it started. Sub-Story: Easy and Jerm work at a members only retail spot where all they do is talk about how much they hate their job and how much they love Hip-Hop. So it dawned on them to start a website, but not knowing a damn thing about them, the boys were up the creek without a paddle. Back to the story, the guys were starting to feel like they were in over their heads and thoughts of letting the site go were on the horizon. But Jerm pulled the team back together and Easy decided a redesign was needed to bring morale back up. Seeing that we needed help, P-Body jumped on board. Literally! But he’s family and it was needed, so no one tripped. Slick P joined the fold again on a 2-1 staff vote. This is the same guy that ignited an argument at our first meeting by saying that Michael Jordan was garbage. Around this time the site was starting to see success with some of its columns, most notably The Debate: Diamond vs. Princess! That was our biggest day to that point. Soon after this we would acquire one of the most highly touted bloggers on the planet, Thic Flair. After a bidding war with a certain website, we got Thic to come to nappyafro.com to keep the movement going. Slick was dismissed from the squad, but this time, get this, from not doing anything! But the moment that changed it all is when Jerm wanted to do the 40 Must Have Southern albums. Not only did it cause friction between staff members (The Minstrel Show is/isn’t a Southern Album and The Love Below is/isn’t a Hip-Hop record) but Easy and Jerm came to blows about it. It ended with a two broken ribs and a stabbing from a two inch blade over which Outkast album was the best. The results were amazing; people actually cared about what we had done. We were a baby success! We came from nothing to being ranked in the top 570,000 websites in the world. ALL BECAUSE OF YOU! But that is our story in a nutshell, the whole truth and nothing but it. The past year has been a remarkable one for nappyafro.com being that it was our first and that we even made it through the year is even more amazing. We would like to thank all of our viewers for keeping us out there. We will continue to bring you reviews the way you want to see them, plus more. We’ve had some funny moments: MF2theDef’s email to P-Body, the security guard taking our flyers, Google banning us for “click bombing”, Pimpin Snooky, and the battle with Wikipedia. But we’re still here and we are going to continue to be the best Hip-Hop review site…EVER! 2008 is either going to make us or break us! Once again thanks again for checking our site out, and don’t be afraid, tell a friend about us! We need feedback! Hit us up at [email protected] and tell us what you think!
