Tying The Knot: A Guide To Ties

The Lounge Header-Details

Tie Bars: Tie bars are great because they keep your tie in place and just add another detail to your look. It makes you look well put together. The problem is many men either wear them too low or too high. A good rule of thumb is to put it even with the top of the breast pocket of your suit jacket.

Tie Collar Pins: If you’re really into your knots and want something to make them pop and stand out, tie collar pins are the answer. They basically are long safety pins that you put through your shirt collar behind the knot of your tie. This pushes your knot up further and makes it stand out. This doesn’t work though for wide collars.

The Dimple: This is another one of those things where I don’t have a textbook definition, it just looks good; when you’re almost done finishing your knot press your thumb and index finger together right below the knot and pinch the material together to make a crease in the tie. This adds character to the tie.

Pocket Squares: If you’re wearing a pocket square it shouldn’t match the tie exactly, that looks tacky. Find pairs that compliment, not match. If you’re really confident you can find combinations that offset, but again, that’s something that comes with experience.

Care: Always keep your ties hung up, don’t throw them in a drawer. This will cause them to lose their shape and wrinkle. Your best bet is to invest in a tie rack. Dry clean only. If you spill something on your tie trying you can try blotting the area with club soda or tonic water, don’t rub or brush though, you’ll just hurt the material.
