Song of the Week: Kanye West – “Love Lockdown”

lovelockdownsotw.jpg

This week I had mental notes about what should be Song of the Week. Why not put up that other bonus track from The Recession? Didn’t Jay-Z jump on a remix recently? Hey, what about Devin The Dude’s new one? In the end, the choice was really obvious (Especially after H20 basically alley-opped this one to me). To be real with you folks, I’m still up in the air about my feelings over “Love Lockdown”. If you followed me on Twitter during the VMA’s (Wait a minute, no one follows us on Twitter!), you already know that I was underwhelmed that Kanye’s new one doesn’t have him dropping one verse. This is a shame since Kanye has really stepped up his rhyming game (“Trying to get that Kobe number, 1 over Jordan”). Plus with the news that when his new album, 808’s & Heartbreak, drops December 16th it’ll be vocoder heavy, it gets me to thinking; Are rappers scared to…just rap? But then again, let me back up a bit and ask this question; In a few days, will I be singing this song? After all my gripes about “Love Lockdown”, probably yes (Even though Yeezy can’t sing for shit, that hook is catchy). Anyway, tell me what you think and I’ll keep backtracking and confusing myself.

  1. I’ve actually always though Kanye could sing a little bit. But I’ve already gotten sick of this song; i’d only go back for the catchy hook, and the CDQ version Kanye leaked sucks: he’s all mumbling and clapping. WTF!!

Why would rappers be afraid to rap?? It doesnt make sense to me: and your wrong, B-Easy: his ENTIRE album will be using the Auto Tune. Blueprint 3 will DEFINATELY be the better album only because this seems really rushed now.

  2. comedic gold!
man, I don’t know how I feel about that song either but hey, it’s Kanye singing. He gotta be doing this for his mom. (RIP Dr.West)

  3. Jesus this song sounded better live…and wasnt impressed live either…damn how’d i go from placing this right under bp3 for most anticipated album this quarter and now I’m unsure that the album will be any good at all. Damn kanye.

  4. Damn I finally get a break from my hectic school schedule and I come to catch up back on the ‘fro and this is what I receive!??!?? KANYE…WTF!!! I mean seriously what the fuck is this shit, I wanna really bite my tongue before I dare label this as “music”. Coming off a good album in ‘Graduation’ and you release some shit like this…not a good look at all (especially for my town Chi-City).

I didn’t even watch the VMAs (or care too for that matter) and it seems like I didn’t really miss anything special with him performing this live. I am a Kanye West fan especially being from Chicago, but this song right here is just really disappointing. If this is how his upcoming album ‘808s and Heartbreak’ is mainly going to be (FUCK AUTO-TUNE!!!) then I’m gonna be highly pissed and probably won’t purchase it. I’m already anticipating Jay-Z’s ‘Blueprint 3′ album more than Kanye’s album (SBK=Big Ass Jay-Z Fan) and shit like this might push his album down further on my list.

They are gonna be loving this song and the album internationally though. This type of music is bumpin’ in their clubs and discos and Kanye will probably sell well with this album overseas. But here in the USA…we’re not gonna be feelin’ this shit. But if he’s releasing this in December, then hurry up and get this out the way and bring on ‘Good Ass Job’.

Guess I’ll go back to listening to some real music in DJ Premier, Termanology, Statik Selektah, etc. cause this bullshit ain’t getting downloaded/uploaded to my iTunes or iPod. If y’all don’t know…”To The Top (Stick 2 The Script)” and “How We Rock” are the jams right now (Real Hip Hop Recognize).

  5. The first time I saw this tracked leaked I was surprised. Happy for the matter that theres actually word of Kanyes new album. But, when I heard this song, I was a little bit disappointed. The auto-tune stuff is decent and all, but it gets a little annoying. I mean, about 3 or so minutes of auto-tune gets annoying to your ears. But, the auto-tune aside, the beat was pretty decent. Not the best, but not the worst. I like how the song was presented. It was a bit sweet, but I feel that Kanye can do much better in this rap game, compared to his other albums.
