BET Hip Hop Awards 2009: The Cyphers

By now, we all should know that the best part of the BET Hip Hop Awards is the cyphers. Last year’s crop of rappers involved were good but this year they got such talent as KRS-One, Mos Def, Joe Budden, Nicki Minaj, Wale, and Eminem.

Cypher Part 1: Joe Budden, Nicki Minaj, Buckshot, Crown Royal, & DJ Premier
Nicki Minaj was okay nice (Once you get past the weird flow) and Budden killed it.

Cyper Part 2: KRS-One, Wale, Nipsey Hussle, Gsan, & DJ Premier
Good to see KRS in the mix. Nipsey did his thing. Sidenote: Watch Wale’s face when Gsan is rapping.

Cyper Part 3: Mos Def, Black Thought, Eminem, & DJ Premier
They put this last for a reason. Good to see Em in any cypher; On BET or down the street.

  1. BET Hip Hop Awards mostly suck and the only thing I watch for is the cypers brother. Joe Budden was the best of the night. And thats the bottom line, because Macho said so! Oh yea!

  2. You forgot to add Buckshot as one of the rappers for the cypher part 1 up there.

But yea this year’s cyphers were better than last year’s one imo. Joe Budden definitely destroyed the first one, and KRS definitely showed his energy in the second one. I can’t really say who killed the last one however, cuz all three MCs did their own thing and definitely killed.

And lol at wale. Dude looks high as fuck.

  3. The nigga Crown Royal got down in the first one. Mouse did his thing. Nicki…GET OFF OF WEEZY’S DICK!

    STOP WITH THE INTERNATIONAL RAPPERS

    What was Mos talking about?

  4. The only cypher that was of any real interest was the last one. I’m gonna go against the grain and say that of the last three emcees the one to shine had to be hands down Black Thought although I’m not even gonna lie he had to put in work to do it with those heavyweights before and after him. I just can’t seem to give em the blind pass this time just because it’s Em and say that he killed it over the other two. He was hot, just not nothing to wow me.

  5. Nicki has finally found her niche. Her mixtapes were good, but this new animated delivery and flow is gonna be what puts her on forreal. She’s polarizing though, folks either love her or hate her, nobody is in the middle forreal.

Buddens stood up tonight forreal. Blastmaster was the ONLY off the dome freestyle of the night and Black Thought FINALY getting some shine. He’s one of the illest to do it so it was good to hear him flow.

I think Mos was good, but Mos always SOUNDS good…pause…even when he ain’t sayin shit. His flow just feels hip hop.

I think all of the cyphers were good, the last one was the best they’ve ever had and the second one let me down a bit. I wanted Wale to come in with the energy that he always has on his songs, but he was crazy subdued.

  6. 1st Cypher:

Damn, Joe Budden destroyed it. All the other emcees (Buckshot mostly) did their best, though Nicki didn’t really impress me nor did Crown Royall (Good job getting there though)

    2nd Cypher:

Wale high as fuck. But all the emcees did their thing, so I didn’t really mind any of them.

    3rd Cypher:

The best overall and destroyed all of the other cyphers. Everyone one of the emcees killed it, I think Black Thought was the winner of tonight though. Eminem did nicely, and so did Mos Def.

  7. When Joe Budden entered the scene, the media under-estimated his SKILLS! Jay Z needs to retire. Everyone knows he rode Biggie’s coattails to be on top of his game. He also told ‘fictitious tales’ about selling drugs! {I hate ya’ dudes who get the real world and rap confused}. Joe Budden is PURE talent! No street lies, no pretense, just a great narrator with unbelievable lyrical talent. The Cypher proved it! There has not been one rapper who wanted to challenge him, or send a ‘bar’ his way.

Nikki Minaj has a great flow. She uses satire in her flow and lyrics. (ex,’No Smoking Sign’} She is another Chaucer in a modern-day urban Canterbury tale. Please comprehend her style. Don’t over-analyze it!

I have been a fan of Buckshot Shorty for years. I was a little disappointed. I was expecting him to be a little stronger on this Cypher. Still love you though!
