Notable Tracks: Killer Mike, Young Dro, & Jay-Z

Back at it again with another Notable Tracks post. This is where I pick three tracks I’ve been listening to lately and share my thoughts (I guess I had to choose a theme here it would “features”). I haven’t done one of these since March, so excuse me if I’m a little out of practice. Or not. Let’s get to it.

Droogie Otis feat. Killer Mike – “The Edge”

Funny enough, the last Notable Tracks I did also featured a track from Droogie Otis (Madlib & Your Old Droog). And I feel the same way now as I did back in March: I need the full project from Madlib and Droog. “The Edge” is more proof of that.

Somehow I missed this when it originally dropped, but I didn’t expect the duo to link with Killer Mike anyway. Mike Bigga slides in and steals the show with a verse that reminds you, even with the multiple Grammy awards, he’s still criminally underrated.

Jermaine Dupri feat. T.I., 2 Chainz, & Young Dro – “Turn Around”

If this track dropped in the early 2000s, it would’ve been platinum on the charts and in the strip clubs. Jermaine Dupri links with ATL legends T.I., 2 Chainz, and Young Dro for “Turn Around”, a certified strip-club banger built on 8Ball & MJG’s classic “Lay It Down” instrumental. All it’s missing is a BET Uncut video.

And as much as I respect the lineup, it’s Young Dro who shines the brightest. Honestly, over the past year, every time I hear Dro, he’s rapping like he’s got something to prove.

Remix with 8Ball and MJG incoming.

Sidenote: I need to get around to watching Magic City: An American Fantasy.

Rick Ross feat. Dr. Dre & Jay-Z – “3 Kings”

I’m revisiting “3 Kings” by Rick Ross featuring Dr. Dre & Jay-Z for a couple reasons. First, I heard it at the barbershop this past weekend and was reminded how strong Jigga’s verse really was:

“Been hoppin’ out the BM with your BM/Taking her places that you can’t go with your per diem
Screamin’ “Carpe diem!” until I’m a dead poet/Robin Williams shit, I deserve a Golden Globe, bitch!”

Second (and randomly), it’s still weird to me that Ross not only ran with Slim Thug’s “Boss/Bawse” title, but also named this track after one of Slim Thug’s more popular songs. Crazy.
