Last week Lil’ Wayne & Bryan “Birdman” Willams were hit with a yet another lawsuit, but this time by music publishing company Bridgeport Music. Why? For copyright infringement and illegally sampling the Funkadelic song “You And Your Folks, Me And My Folks”. I dont know why the lawsuit comes about now seeing as the song in question, “Army Gunz”, was on Birdman & Lil’ Wayne’s 2006 album Like Father, Like Son.
Surprisingly enough, I’ve been hearing that sample a few times lately. So why not look a three songs that use the Funkadelic sample.
Birdman & Lil’ Wayne – “Army Gunz”
Album: Like Father Like Son
Year: 2006
Not only is this song the inspiration for this post, it’s also my favorite track off Like Father, Like Son. It’s my favorite for a few reasons: First, it’s doesn’t feature Stunna at all. Second, it’s great use of the sample. And third, Wayne goes in. Hope it was worth the money though fellas.
Killer Mike – “Burn”
Album: Pl3dge
Year: 2011
Mike Bigga also makes good uses of the sample but different from the Cash Money version. Here it’s used more as a call to arms. Also, unlike the other uses of the sample here on this list, “Burn” actually uses vocals from the orignal record:
You and your folks love me and my folks/Like me and my folks love you and your folks/If there ever was folks/That ever, ever was poor, yeah
Chris Rock – “Your Mother’s Got A Big Head”
Album: Burn Suspect
Year: 1991
Yea you read right, that’s Chris Rock rapping in 1991 over Funkadelic’s “You And Your Folks, Me And My Folks” sample. Technically, he’s not a rapper and this is all for jokes, but he’s got that early 90’s style flow down. Of course this isn’t the last time Rock got behind the mic.
