The Starting Five: The Producer Edition

I felt it was the best time to do another installment of The Starting Five with the NBA Finals approaching this Thursday. This edition is focused on the producers who gave Hip-Hop that overall sound. The list focuses on various types of producers: samplers (RZA), scratchers (DJ Premier), drums (J Dilla), and all the other instruments included to give a producer his or her individual sound. A mixtape is also included of some of these producer’s best beats. Enjoy and don’t forget to let us know your top five producers of all time.

Download: The Starting Five: Producers Edition [Mixtape]

  1. wow, very nice *tips hat*
the only one I could even think to add is a personal favorite, Dan ‘The Automator’ Nakamura. otherwise you got all my other heroes

  2. Where is Erick Sermon? It’s hard to argue with that starting 5. But Timbaland has to be on one of those teams. You could even make a minor argument Daz (since he did produce The Chronic)

    GOOD SHIT

  3. Man… I know that the Neptunes make poppy shit, but this list is pretty much only the hip-hop heads list…..

    Plus no Just Blaze, smfh

  4. RZA is overated should have put Kanye in the starting 5, and how u just gonna put some random ass nigga Kno on da lineup man its a million niggaz that could have went instead of him

    1. How when Kanye has admitted on biting his style? Anyone who thinks RZA is overrated probably didn’t listen to hiphop pre 2000. RZA is the king of sampling. Both Kanye West & Just Blaze (and more) have admitted to taking from his sampling technique, and said that hip hop would not be the same without RZA. Plus RZA is such a talented producer that Quentin Tarrantino has asked him to do the score for Kill Bill 1 & 2 (he’s done about ten movie scores total; i don’t think anyone else mentioned on this page has done one movie score). RZA is just not in the starting five, but he is the captain too. do ya homework!

Kno is real nice. Most people will talk shit because they never heard of him, but i’m feeling most of his beats. He can definitely define “diggin in the crates”.

      1. I wasnt arguing that Kno was nice im just sayin you cant put personal favorites in there if knowone has herd of them, its a million producers u gotta pick between producers wit names. And yeah u right RZA should b up dere but his beats are not better Than Kanye or Just Blaze beats

        1. That’s debatable, I feel RZA is as good as if not better than Kanye but they’ve both made beats that aren’t that good (though about 90% are good) Just Blaze is nearly flawless and there is no excuse for not having him, unless you forgot.

  5. Just Blaze (and Danger Mouse) should definitely be on my honorable mention list. Maybe even Dan The Automator because the beats on Deltron 3030 and Dr. Octagonecologyst are out of this world. However, The Neptunes and Timbaland aren’t making my list. I’m not saying that they are poor producers….just too pop (R&B) for me…sorry, but fuck the radio.

    The Pop Team:
    Timbaland
    1. Justin Timberlake ft. T.I. – My Love
    2. Nas ft. Ginuwine – You Owe Me
    3. Missy Elliot – Work It
    4. Jay-Z ft. UGK – Big Pimpin’
    5. Petey Pablo – Raise Up

    The Neptunes
    1. Clipse – Grindin’
    2. Ludacris – Southern Hospitality
    3. Jay-Z – Excuse Me Miss
    4. Snoop Dogg – Drop It Like It’s Hot
    5. Nelly – Hot In Herre

Jermaine Dupri (and he’s making the hip hop honors?)
    1. J.D. & Ludacris – Welcome To Atlanta
    2. Dem Franchize Boyz – I Think They Like Me
    3. J.D. & Jay-Z – Money Ain’t A Thang
    4. Usher ft. Alicia Keys – My Boo
    5. Lil’ Bow Wow – Bow Wow

    Jazze Pha
    1. Slick Rick ft. OutKast – Street Talkin
    2. Nappy Roots – Awnaw
    3. Field Mob – Sick Of Being Lonely
    4. Ludacris – Area Codes
    5. Trick Daddy ft. Cee-Lo & Big Boi – In Da Wind

    Lil Jon
    1. Too Short ft. Lil Jon & Eastside Boys – Shake That Monkey
    2. Trick Daddy – Play No Games
    3. Young Buck – Shorty Wanna Ride
    4. Pitbull – Culo
    5. Lil Jon & The Eastside Boys ft. Ying Yang Twins – Get Low

DJ Paul & Juicy J (sixth men) (should be in my honorable mention)
    1. UGK ft. Outkast – Int’l Players Anthem (I Choose You) – one of the best produced songs ever, although they bit it from Ayatollah (Cormega – Rap’s A Hustle)
    2. Three 6 Mafia ft. Young Buck, 8Ball & MJG – Stay Fly
    3. Ludacris ft. Common & Spike Lee – Do The Right Thing
    4. Young Buck ft. The Game & Ludacris – Stomp
    5. Three 6 Mafia ft. Project Pat – Poppin’ My Collar

Honorable Mention: DJ Toomp, Jim Jonsin, Mannie Fresh, Cool & Dre, will.i.am, P. Diddy, Scott Storch, Rick Rock, [insert your favorite producer here]

    1. Chief Xcel! DJ Shadow! Blockhead! The Kickdrums! DJ Fakts One! Benny Blanco! Paper Tiger! David Banner! and every other producer that I’M a big fan of!!!

all seriousness, killer list arkitekt. youve even got extensive knowledge on styles you dont care for. well done sir.

  6. @arkitekt that luda joint wasn’t prod by 3-6 I think it was 9th wonder. List was pretty much on point. Btw is the mixtape the actual songs or the beats?

  7. That’s cool as hell you mentioned Organized Noize cuz they really are super dope, but no Timbo anywhere? That’s honestly nuckin futs to me lol…. Other than that transgression (IMO) I do agree with the startin five no doubt, Pretty ill lineup overall to me..

  8. Where is DJ Paul & Juicy J!!??? Where is Mannie Fresh!!!??? Where is Large Professor!!??? What about Daz???? What about T-Mix from Suave House back in the day???
