Poll Question: Did Deeper Than Rap Flop?

deeperthanrapquestion

After all the speculation, we finally know how much Rick Ross’ third album, Deeper Than Rap, sold in it’s first week. It entered the charts at #1 and sold over 150,000 copies. Ever since the projected numbers came out last week, we’ve gotten e-mails from people sharing there thoughts about them. One side says it’s a slap in the face to 50 Cent and shows Ross’ career is alive and well. While the other side says that with all the hype, Deeper Than Rap should have did much better. Of course, we gotta take this to a vote. What do think of Deeper Tha Rap‘s chart perfromance? The poll closes on Sunday (And don’t worry, we still did the The Numbers Game).

  1. I don’t wanna be labeled as a dick rider but look at all the facts:

    1. Magnificent barely even made it on the charts. Hustlin and The Boss were two major hits that exalted his career. Magnificent didn’t do anything.

    2. There wasn’t much promotion coming from Ross’s camp. Technically the only promotion he had was the entire feud with 50 cent(which he lost) and he still came out on top.

    3. Most importantly compare Ross to someone that came out the same time he did and from the same area. T-Pain came out in 05 and for every single one of his cd’s he’s had monster single/hits which help his cd sell. Look at Three Rings, only sold 150,000 and had 3 top charting singles. Deeper than rap sold over 150,000 with no chart topping singles.

Deeper than rap wasn’t a flop, it was a major success.

    1. Now Thisis50 posted something that’s worth noting. Jadakiss had no promotion and his label barely backed him AND his leading single got no airplay outside of NY…and he sold 135,000. Yea it is worth noting BUT how long has Jada been in the game? It’s pretty well established he has a solid fanbase.

    2. How in the hell did Ross come out on top? 50’s album ain’t even out yet. Shit man, 50 will double Ross’ sells. 50 killed him in the diss songs they kept releasing and he’ll kill him in album sells. You’ll see.

  2. I don’t like Rick Ross. People think this is a slap in the face to 50 Cent? His album hasn’t even came out yet. Just wait, 50 will slaughter this fool. I didn’t buy Ross’ and I’m most likely going to buy 50’s. His first two singles were solid. (You guys need to review the new Tech N9ne album that came out this week!)

  3. ok im sorry 50 can’t rap he is not hip hop or rap he trys to make a career out of trying to kill careers obviously that didn’t work with ross if it did ross would not of broke 100000 come on now get your head on straigt its a piss poor economy no is buying shit so 150000 is a great week quit dick riding 50s and realize he is fucking garbage without em or dre he would be nothin o and what happen to him killing the games career that didn’t work out he got destroyed

    1. Riding 50’s dick? Dude, get your facts straight. Since albums aren’t selling as good now days, lets take 50 Cent’s “Curtis” album and Ross’s “Trilla” album. These albums came out relatively close together. Which one sold more? Let me know. (Here, I’ll give you a hint. “Curtis” (released on September 11, 2007) had first week sells of 691k while “Trilla” (released on February 19, 2008) had first week sells of 198k). Oh, and you’re sayin 50 wouldn’t be anything without Em? That may be so, but he has to have some talent to have done this well. Face it, Ross doesn’t have nearly the flow that 50 has or the rhymes that 50 is able to drop. And although I love The Game, even when he was with 50, he didn’t touch 50’s sells. Go ahead and tell me 50’s garbage, but you know you’re dead wrong. Get up!

      1. Curtis had the whole 50 vs Kanye thing going on, so miss me with that one.

Since you want to compare..what did TOS do in its first week..less than a 100K! Trilla outsold that album in its first week.

But when and if 50’s new one come out, we’ll see what numbers he puts up.

        1. Alright Jerm, but if you’re going to talk about what G-Unit put up, lets talk about what DJ Khaled’s album “We Global” put up. T.O.S. sold just over 100k for first week sells while “We Global” didn’t even break 50k for first week sells. And Jerm, while I’m talkin to you, don’t you think your Ross review is just a little over the top. I mean, 4.5 stars? Don’t you think a four would be a little more fitting? Hit me back!

          1. I HONESTLY believe that this album deserved the rating it got. The “weakest” song on the album is the joint with Dream..but that shit is kinda hot.

            RAWSE!

          2. @King Jerm

So i guess Rick Ross is not only in Triple C’s but he’s in Terror Squad as well since you know We Global is “Ross’s Group”…

            ::in RICK ROSS voice::

            “JSK is KNOWLEDGELESS”

            ROSSSSS!

  4. Technically speaking, people say Rick Ross’s ‘Deeper Than Rap’ flopped because it only sold 150,000 in its first week compared to his past two albums’ first week sales, ‘Trilla’ (198,000) and ‘Port Of Miami’ (187,000). That could be true but shouldn’t be taken too seriously considering the times in 2009 are different from those of 2006 and 2008.

We’re officially in a recession and it is know that CD sales are drastically down as people aren’t buying music like they used to and digital sales are surpassing those of CD sales. I’m pretty sure that more people illegally downloaded/bootlegged the album than those that went and purchased a CD copy. As Pitbull stated, his recent beef with 50 Cent and his stint as a C.O. also was a factor in his declined sales as people who were once Ross and 50 fans are probably supporting 50 and not supporting Ross because of the beef and don’t like that he lied about his past in regards to the kind of music he releases and the lyrics he speaks.

Also as Pitbull stated, the first single “Magnificent” wasn’t really a chart-topping release as it peaked at #62 on the Hot 100. If you look at this album compared to his past two it’s really a very different album. Mostly in terms of the production and some part of Ross’ lyrics, it doesn’t sound anything like ‘Trilla’ or ‘Port Of Miami’. Other than possibly releasing “Maybach Music 2” as a single, there aren’t really any other songs on the album that could be possible chart-toppers to make this album blow up. ‘Trilla’ and ‘Port Of Miami’ had those chart-topping singles like “Hustlin'” (“Everyday I’m Hustlin” became a saying for so many people) and “The Boss” that made those other albums take off.

I don’t think ‘Deeper Than Rap’ flopped at all with 150,000 sales the first week. Hell, most rappers would be lucky and grateful if they attained those kind of numbers the first week in regards to the economic climate we’re in. Must respect to Lil Wayne, but rappers and labels should not be expecting or expected to do his numbers of 1,000,000 in the first week. I think that’s a big thing that record labels are doing and is what is fucking them up. They don’t understand how Lil Wayne literally developed such a big anticipation for his album with all of the mixtape and guest features he did and released in the 3 years between ‘Tha Carter II’ and ‘Tha Carter III’. It’s very similar to what 50 Cent did leading up to the release of ‘Get Rich Or Die Tryin'”, which sold 987,000 its first week (almost 1 mill the first week like Weezy). There’s a method to the madness that works but it has to be done at the right time.

  5. this is hilarious did I ever stick up for ross no but im about to you can say what what you want but I think he has a better flow the 50 and spits about more shit than murder and killing and shit ok ill be real 50 first album get rich or die trying was hot but come on now his next with candy shop what the fuck then curtis fucking blew shit kanye killed him on that maby its me but I don’t think trying to kill careers makes him great ok next point g unit he got rid of buck who could spit better than him and the game who is 10 times better than him who next banks cause he is better but alright look im not goin to fight with another grown ass man on the net its childish we are both entitled to our own opinion lets leave it at that my opinion is when people hype 50 up it driver me nuts anyways say what you got to back im done

    1. Alright man, your’re right, we are entitled to our opinions. I just get mad when Ross thinks he can go against 50 Cent. I mean, Ross came out with Mafia Music before 50 even released a diss song. And Ross was a corrections officer. I’m sorry, but that does change my opinion about him. Anyway, we’ll see what happens when 50’s album drops. I never wanted to fight with you, I just wanted to state what I had to say.

  6. Has anyone picked up a newspaper lately. We are in a recession. Millions of people are out of work. Millions of people have lost their homes or are in foreclosure. Do you think people are going to take an unemployment check and buy an album or buy food for the family. If I didn’t have so much respect for the industry, I might have scooped so low and bought a bootlegged copy. Because of the economy and the sells of this album, I am convinced that this album is in fact solid and the sales are legit.
Stop fooling yourself and face the facts. Stop dreaming, stop hating, you cant do nothing about the sales. Honest poeple went out and boughy the albumn because they wanted too. You are wasting your time and hours and hours of just plain stupidity and ignorance and making it look like your mama didn’t raise you. Need I say say more. The albume is selling because it is good homie.

  7. T.O.S. SOLD OVER 100K….50 CENTS FIRST TWO ALBUMS SOLD A MILLION IN A WEEK AND G-UNITS BEG FOR MERCY ONLY DID 300K…EVEN LLOYD BANKS 1ST ALBUM SOLD MORE THAN BEG 4 MERCY…GROUP ALBUMS ALWAYS SELL LESS THAN SOLO. T.I. ALWAYS GOES PLATINUM BUT P$C DIDNT EVEN SELL 100K

    1. Yeah man, ricky just proved my point. I’m guessing this is aimed at Jerm. I mean if your gonna mention T.O.S., then you gotta bring up We Global.

      1. @JSK

How is We Global a group album for Ross??????????

Terror Squad produces all of Dj Khaled’s Albums and Terror Squad is Fat Joe’s group…

SO YOU’RE SAYING EVERYONE ON WE GLOBAL IS PART OF THE “ROSS GROUP?”

        GTFOH!!!!!!!!!!

  8. I dunno if youwanna throw in we global that was more dj kalhed bringing in ace hood I think ross was listeeennn regardless kalhed is garbage but you gotta respect his hustle he’s making money being annoying so I don’t think we can say ross had a group album but real talk people are still goin to say what they want about 50 and ross regardless if 50 flops or sells more I think we can take groups outta the discussion and quit fighting about who is better lets be mature and move on my bad Jsk and lets just debate weather we think it flopped or not

    1. Yeah, we can definitely be mature about this and stop the 50 vs. Ross thing. I’ll be honest. I definitely wouldn’t say this album flopped whatsoever. We’re in a recession and so with that said, this album put up some good numbers. I honesty thought it would sell around 100k at the most. When Relapse (Eminem) comes out, I think we’ll see some incredible numbers. (By the way, I’m not trying to start an arguement about an Eminem Ross thing.)

  9. Ross album was good overall but some songs I didn’t feel too much. I have to give him props for a solid effort though, but 4.5 is pushing it. I don’t think his album is something people will be bumping for the next 10 to 15 years. Maybe certain songs

  10. WTF? Officer Ricky is a dead meat. he even got the nerve to diss THE FREAKIN AWESOME Eminem .that fatass is done imean real done.for his album it’s gonna flop sooner .next week sooner.and 150000 is nothing compare to 50 CENT .50’s gonna rip da **** outta the officer

    1. Yeah he is! Officer Ricky is done man! 50 is gonna out sell this goon 4:1! Rick Ross even had the nerve to put Mafia Music on his album! I mean, come on, that was the only halfway decent diss song he put out. I think Relapse will possibly go platinum in a week. If Wayne can do it, Em can do it.

      1. Aight… I may agree that Ross is a little out of place dissin Em(which is just for sales), but yall need to pull yall candy-made dicks outta that Eminem blow-up doll in your room. Man, Eminem is NOT the same rapper that built that “best rapper alive” fan base. Both singles out right now suck and THEY ARE NOT in rotation. That bullshit aint on the radio! I mean really… the tracklisting looks weak as fuck. Monotonmous isn’t the word! And yall yellin out Platinum and Classic status already… yall better check your logic again…

        1. Even if Em isn’t as good as he used to be, he’s still better than the majority of rappers out there. If you think Ross is better than Em even today, then it’s you who needs to check your logic. Em is still a great rapper and Relapse will be a fantastic album. If Em’s album gets a lower rating then Ross’s album then ya’ll wack as fuck!

          1. JSK you a simple nigga… Mafia Music/Magnificient vs. We Made You/3a.m.??? No contest! Its a Ross winnin battle. That’s all we got from “Relapse”, except for “Crack A Bottle” which is underwhelming. I don’t care how Em was; this aint ’05! “We Made It” can’t fuck with the worst song off “Deeper Than Rap”(You can make the pick). And how could anybody take your opinion serious? Its drippin with bias and you don’t have a valid point. You haven’t even heard the album and you claim its better than a concrete piece of work… FUCK OUTTA HERE BUDDY!

        2. Word is Bond V-G. How are people already going to say that Relapse is gonna be a classic or even better then a cd that is out when its not even out yet. I thought fans are suppose to suck in the hype. Not the hype suck up the fans. Last time this happened we got something called Tha Carter III and last I checked it may have outsold the rest but that cd wasn’t even that good.

          1. Now you’re knockin Em for his lyrics? You compare Ross’s lyrics with Em’s, and there’s no contest. Ross just raps about bein a boss, gettin money, seelin cocaine, and bein a damn boss again! Em at least is original. He has other things to rap about then money and girls. Listen to We Made You and tell me that’s not original. I’m sure I’m not the only one who likes it. 3a.m. is a little different but it grew on me. I never said Em’s album will be a classic, but it’ll still be solid. And I’m sorry, but the stuff Ross is talkin about are topics we’ve heard him rap about before. Em’s stuff is more recent and topics we haven’t even heard rapped about. Em will outsell Ross, 50 will outsell Ross, and Dre will outsell Ross! Officer Ricky is done!

  11. ok em best shit is behind him so far relapse has two shit singles 3am is supposibly dark and stating his return if it was his former self 3am would have been like the whole marshall album em is just trying to make people happy by making what they want he has nothing to rap about anymore just if you wanna say shit first go back and listen to his first couple albums and then this and you see what I mean relapse won’t be a classic but it has a chance to be decent if em was dropping rap like his old shit it would be a classic but now its just time for him to hang it up

  12. WOW, i see ppl do not understand the music biz. Officer Ricky said if 50 sold 10 mill that he would sell 12 mill, so as for that he flopped,. n 4 all the cats talking about the times we r in,so what, we all still buy our music, don,t we ? but listen, it costs more than 150,000 to put an album together so if u don,t sell more than what it cost to make then u r loosing money , so there for it is a flop.Officer Rick said he wants to go at eminem, but he can,t be that desperate 4 record sales , can he ? n as 4 the game , the biggest he has ever been is with g-unit. 50 made over a hundred n thirty mill in 08, he is the most earning black entertainer, under oprah.50 doesn,t need to sell another record, don,t u no he gives out his mix cd,s 4 free.RR said he is a c.e.o but i think he meant c.o., holla

      1. Game’s biggest was with G-Unit…(LOST ALL RESPECT RIGHT THERE)

Thank you SOUNDBOY for pretty much reinforcing what everyone knows about 50…DUDE’S GOT MONEY…we know.

and that economics lesson you gave…doesn’t do the word “flop” justice. Here is the TRUE definition of a flop(AND HOPEFULLY PUTS THIS THREAD TO REST)

*If a rapper builds up a cd soooo much and gets sooo much hype behind it, and in return it is below average material and the album sells below the average of that rapper’s usual album sales.*

DID DEEPER THAN RAP DO ANY OF THOSE TWO??

        NO!

I’m getting really F***IN tired of people saying Ross flopped and Ross is done or over just because he’s a c.o. or 50 beat him. GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT and you will see Deeper Than Rap in NO way flopped, material wise and sales wise…

ROSS PUT OUT SOME OF HIS BEST WORK YET AND SOLD CLOSE TO WHAT ALL HIS PREVIOUS ALBUMS SOLD.

        1. i’m sorry the album was a huge flop because these are the facts from a insider that knows the real first off FACT: defjam put 1.6 million into this project and they projected atleast 300K for the first week and he only did half of that Fact#2 he signed a 360 deal with def jam wich means if ross dont hit double platinum then his career is really over because he will owe def jam about a million cash fact#3 def jam really does by there artist albums in the first week to help creat a buzz and they bought 50K for ross which means he only sold about 100K so remember this beef with 50 because you will be hearing about the recession has taken ross down in about a month and fact number 4# this week sales are in 35K which brings his total to about a total of 180K if this album even touches gold it wont reach it til 2010 so i hope you rick ross fans enjoy this album because it will be a long time before he drops a new one but you can go get a bootleg mixtape
