The Numbers Game: Rick Ross Is #1

rickrossnumbersgame430

Deeper Than Rap did what most expected and debuted on the top of the charts. He sold over 150,000 copies in his first week. I’m not gonna get too heavy into the chart performance of Ricky’s new album since i already covered it in a previous post (Where you can even vote if it’s a commercial failure or not).

What I will talk about is Asleep In The Bread Aisle. Asher Roth’s debut came in at #5 and sold over 60,000 albums. That’s not bad, but I think people saying that he had a chance of outselling Ricky Ross may have raised expectations a little high. Still not bad for a debut.

Also debuting this week is Chester French with their debut album Love The Future. I usually don’t mention any artists here if their not Hip-Hop or R&B but they did release the Jacques Jams Vol. 1 mixtape with Clinton Sparks (“Nerd Girl” is my shit!). The album got off to a slow start at #77 and moved around 6,000 units.

Lastly at #186 is West Coast Hip-Hop vets The Grouch & Eligh with the album Say G&E!. I’d be lying if I said I knew anything about this album besides the Living Legends connection.

  1. Good look for Rick Ross to get the #1 spot with 158,027 albums sold. That’s crazy, there was no way that Asher Roth was selling more than Rick Ross the first week (those expectations were way too high). Asher’s new to the game so he doesn’t have as big a fan base as Ross and released an average album (‘Deeper Than Rap’ was better). It’s funny that Universal Records shipped 100,000 copies of the album and fell about 30,000 copies short of their “high expectations”.

    Day26 better step it up with only 150,296 album sold in their 2nd week on the charts. Diddy’s not messing around anymore with these Making The Band groups fucking up his money and label. That’s crazy cause their debut album sold 190,000 its first week. Isn’t your 2nd album supposed to sell more that the 1st when you were brand new artists, plus you have a damn reality TV show on MTV. I guess people got tired of seeing them bitch, cry, and make up on the show.

    Good shit with the numbers game Easy! …Now back to listening to ‘The Marshall Mathers LP’ (‘Relapse’ ain’t got shit on the classic Em.)

    1. I hope that with the way this Day 26 album is droppin, folks will stop with the dance/pop albums. Them niggas can sing, so let them sing. Put It On Her is an okay song, but it’s been done over and over. The entire CD is too much dance floor, too much autotune, and too much nonsense. The Formula he had with 112 made for some fire CD’s. Let them boys sing.

      1. Yeah I totally agree with you on that point Saule. ‘Forever In A Day’ has way too much Dance/Pop tracks on it and not enough ballads. You can tell that they’re trying to stay current with the popular trends like Auto-Tune and Commercial/Radio ready songs to sell albums (which obviously isn’t working out like they planned). Like you said, they need to go back to the ballad/slow songs that dominated their debut album with songs like “Since You’ve Been Gone” and “What It Feels Like”. There aren’t really any male groups nowadays like the 90’s had with Boyz II Men, 112, Jagged Edge, New Edition, Jodeci, etc., so they would be perfect to fill that void. They would see major sales if they went that direction and dominated that area as opposed to trying to fit in with what’s popular and current.

        1. I mean, them Day26 guys can sing, but as I’ve heard the album is just too much of the stuff that we’ve gotten over in the R&B stage. I think what the people really want is just the R&B music that you can groove too, without being too sexual and all.

        2. Yeah them dance/pop songs are overdone too much. I’m basically sick of hearing that type of style. Labels should definitely let artist get more creative control on their albums and let these guys really sing. 90’s definitely had some good R&B acts.

  2. ok, after listening to both albums and seeing the numbers game, i decided Asher was very overrated. Rick Ross deserved this: jury is still out on the 4.5 rating. 50 Cent might beat the dude: his last album sold 600k, remember? At the same time, TOS flopped, so it could be anyone’s game?
    Day26=FAIL

    1. Yeah, people really overrated Asher Roth and his album, and the comparisons and similarities to Em didn’t help much either. I doubt that he’ll reach 500,000 and go Gold with his album, but I do see Rick Ross possibly reaching that mark in some months (he just needs to release “Maybach Music 2″ as a single and use Wayne and Kanye’s current momentum and popularity to make it a big record). Agreed, I don’t know if ‘Deeper Than Rap’ deserved a 4.5 rating (respect to KJ), more like a 4 rating at the most. The production on the album is absolutely crazy though especially from the J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League, The Runners, and The Inkredibles.

      Yeah I think 50 will outsell Ross in his first week sales when ‘Before I Self Destruct’ is released. Despite what people may think, 50 still has a huge fan base especially internationally that Rick Ross isn’t even close to having. I thought ‘Curtis’ was his worst album release to date but it still managed to get 691,000 its first week. 50 just has to really bring it on this next album, hopefully close to ‘Get Rich Or Die Tryin'”, cause people are starting to doubt him and his skills. I don’t think T.O.S. (Terminate On Sight)’s sales will reflect 50 as a solo artist. People know there’s a difference in what you get with 50 and G-Unit as a group.
