Vibe’s Best Rapper Alive Tournament, Part 3: And The Winner Is…

eminemboominvibe.jpg

What’s happenin’? Last time I told you about this tournament, I told you it had come down to the final two competitors: Jay-Z and Eminem. While I didn’t agree with the way the tournament was being run with all of the crazy match ups going on (Ludacris vs. Young Dro), and all the people who shouldn’t have even been in it in the first place (Soulja Boy, Diddy, Shawty LO, etc.), I actually couldn’t wait to see who would win this tournament. Would Eminem “Renegade” Jay-Z like he did on The Blueprint, or would Jay prove he’s a much more consistent artist? Well, enough beating around the bush: The winnner is…Eminem. Say what!?!

That’s right, Eminem took home the crown in a shocking landslide: 69% of the vote to Jay-Z’s 31%. DAMN! It’s “Renegade” all over again! On the real though, I’m a little torn here. I really like both of them: while Jay has more experience and has a more polished flow, Eminem takes his time with his album; he released two classic albums and a near-classic album all in a row and won the Grammy for Best Rap album three times in a row, something only Kanye can lay claim to. Still, it was kind of shocking for Em to win by that much: his last album came out four years ago. Jay has released two albums in that time, with BP3 coming this year. However, maybe that’s what buried him: Kingdom Come was listened to by everyone and was only decent, and American Gangster was near-classic but listened to by hardly anyone.

While I’m kind of with Jay on this one, I do have to say that Eminem is an accomplished artist: when he first came out, I was kind of skeptical because, and I’m not even gonna front on this one, he was white. But when people saw Dr. Dre cosigning him, then they started paying attention. While you’d think that Eminem’s coming up into the game would cause a surge of white rappers to join the game (I count two: Lil’ Wyte and Asher Roth), that wasn’t the case; this was, I think, good for him because it continued to place him in a league of his own, and he continued to make amazing music. So even though I was betting on Jay, I can’t say Em doesn’t deserve this.

And so with that, the Vibe Tournament comes to a close, thank the Lord. Rakim and KRS-One probably don’t even care that they weren’t even nominated now, seeing how weirdly everything turned out. While I like Vibe as a magazine, I don’t think that anyone can tell me that this tournament wasn’t fucked up. What do you think?

  1. This whole tournament left a bad taste in my mouth as a hip-hop fan… back in the day it was “Vibe” and the “Source” and “XXL” was just emerging… all of these magazines have turned into something contradictory…
And this tournament is a fucking joke and a fallacy.

  2. Though there were MANY rappers that shouldn’t have been in the tournament period. Still arguably the 3 best rappers (Jay-Z, Eminem, and Nas) alive made it to the final four. People can say that i left out emcee’s such as KRS- 1, Rakim, and Big Daddy Kane; but they aren’t relevant to today and their longevity has ended though there influence will ALWAYS live. With that being said, Eminem could arguably be the best rapper alive. He has the classics (3), and yes the Eminem Show was a classic hands down. He made hip hop more commercial to other races and genres of music i know a lot of rock heads that don’t like rap but love Eminem and what he says. And since Lil Wayne thinks his record sales means he’s the best, Eminem’s last 4 albums have gone diamond worldwide. He’s never had a bad album, while Nas had Nastradamous and Jay had Blueprint 2. And pound for pound against other emcees, he holds his own, and yes i mean Renegade!! So Think about it??

  3. @Ty Money….On the real, Em got 1 classic (Eminem Show) MMLP was blazing, but not a classic, SSLP was funny, but it was a more underground Em, he was just busting flows over some beats. Now Encore sold a lot, but it was his worst album. IMO.

I can’t believe that Jay lost, not really, because Em is WAY more popular than Jay.

I’ll tell you this, B-Easy doesn’t even comment, but I bet when he sees this he might.

I wonder why that guy doesn’t ever comment?

  4. Wait….MMLP and SSLP aint’ classics? What? Only Encore isn’t a classic. Re-Up was Em just messing with people’s heads.

Eminem is consistent. You can’t name songs of his that are bad, just songs that aren’t as good compared to other Eminem songs. But everything considered, Eminem’s “Not Good” songs can shit on some dude’s whole catalogues.

  5. Yeah, I said Eminem show was near classic personally but it was still better than most rappers albums. SSLP and MMLP are classic hands down, and Encore sucked, period. Re-Up I don’t consider to be his, just other people really. I mean, Encore wasn’t BAD, but it doesn’t compare at all of Em’s other catologue.

And stop dissing the Blueprint 2!! It was good IMO: Kingdom Come and BP2 were good, but because they weren’t classics and people had high expectations for them, they were considered bad. In My Lifetime Vol. 1, now that was just bad, hands down. And Nastradamus made me cry.

  6. In My Lifetime has a classic hip hop song tho, Where I’m From. And sunshine, city is mine and who you wit are good shit as well

  7. are you serious!?!? Sunshine is the song that made everyone lose respect in Jay!! Though I can’t front, sunshine is kind of a nice song, the city is mine is awful; jay sounds really uninspired, but Who You Wit was my joint for awhile.

  8. I mean I was only 7 when it came out but from what I hear it was the video for sunshine that lost jay hella respect, that green suit still haunts (Go Crazy, “My worst color is light green). City is Mine was good to me and another good joint I forgot was Face/Off, and the intro song which was nuts. It’s definitely his most inconsistent and his weakest. I thing Kingdom Come was highly underrated.

  9. Blueprint II was an underated and a very good Jay-Z Album. The only problem was that it had way too much fill but it did have the quality songs. Kingdom Come now that is a bad album for Jay-z standards. Em is overated in my opinion. He is always either being too foolish or too depressing. Jay has a much better flow and makes better music in my opinion. Jay also has more variety. I just named Em’s too types of songs that he makes: commical or depressing.

  10. Wow Em won huh…

I’m a little shocked since he haven’t put out an album in a while. I didn’t like Encore at all, I really hated that album. I remember when that album came out, and I bumped it in my ride, and I was very upset just like when he decided to fuck up 2Pac album “Loyal To The Game”, luckily I have a lot of the original songs from that album so I can substitute the horrible production Em did for Pac. I’m just being real, this is from a big Tupac fan, and hip hopper.

Jay-Z Sunshine was weak, City Is Mine is terrible, and especially I know what girls like featuring Puff Daddy and Lil Kim, that song is terrible. Everytime I listen to that song, I wonder what Jay-Z was thinking. In My Lifetime Volume 1 wasn’t a bad album, it had about 3 to 4 songs that was terrible but besides that he had good songs like Imaginary Player, Streets Is Watching, Real Niggaz with Too $hort, Where I’m From, A Million And One Questions, and etc.

Blueprint 2 wasn’t terrible but it isn’t that good either, I bump a few selected joints. I feel Volume 3 could have been more better though because that song with Mariah Carey sucked, and the song S.Carter with Amil didn’t hit me too good either.

Em first two CDs was really good to me, and Eminem show was pretty good too but once again that Encore had me scratching my head crazy. I didn’t feel Re-Up too much even though it was more of a compilation album. Hopefully Eminem new LP will be the shit, I’m looking forward to Blueprint 3. Word to Jay-Z “You better put the complete version of Dead Presidents 3!! That snippet is dope”.

VIBE magazine and source really been tripping over the years. I don’t know what to say about them guys right now. Everybody is entitled to their own opinion but some shit is off the chain, and the staff within that magazine family know they are tripping with some of the list. What happened to Scratch Magazine by the way?

  11. Shocker. I mean, past or so year, Jay has gotten like even more mainstream appeal, and since Eminem hasn’t dropped an album since Encore (The Raw and Uncut mixtape don’t count). Well, obviously I respect both of them (who doesn’t?), but still, being more of a Jay fan than a Em fan, then I would like to cast my vote for the Jiggaman. But seriously, who leaves Rakim, KRS- One off the list? And who puts out of all things, Diddy and even Shawty Lo. Hilarious.

  12. You can’t really even name a bad Eminem song. That’s how consistent he is. Eminems first four albums are probaly better than any other hip hop artists first four albums. Who can name a bad Eminem song cause I can name off the top of my head “I Know What Girls Like”, “Things that you Do”, “Hello Brooklyn”, “Always be my sunshine”, and there are a lot of other songs that Jay should’ve never let touch a CD.

  13. @ TyMoney…he had a whole album of bad songs…ENCORE!

The first part of MM was hot, then after track 8 or 9, it started to fall off.
SSLP had about 5 good songs on it.

Take a cue from ya boy and quit being a STAN! which is a great song by the way.

  14. @ P-Body…yea I forgot Imaginary Player…that’s flossing at its finest, one of my fave Jay songs. I think Em is a great lyricist but to be honest I’ve never bumped a full album, Eminem show is probably my favorite, and I dont end up listening to Em that much on the ipod, he’s either silly or just plain depressing. And I am definitely looking for a full DP3. But back to the bracket @ Chew, I think Jay has become more mainstream over the years in part due to Def Jam position, Beyonce rumors and other business deals, but ever since his post retirement albums I feel like he’s fallen out of the good graces of the rap community minus die hards like me. Heres hoping he gets back on top with the new Blueprint

  15. @ King Jerm. Every rapper has their bad album but it was still a descent album and still better than bp2, vol 1, vol 3, kc. MMLP had no fall off. The end of the was hot too. Criminal, under the influence, amityville, and bitch please were hot as hell. Even Dre just came out and said that the MMLP was the best album he’s put together. Im far from a stan. Im a huge jay fan. Im just saying that Eminem is as deserving of the title as Jay and more deserving than most.

  16. Encore better than BP2 and Vol. 3!?? GOH, Vol.3 was near-classic, encore was no where near that. and I’d say BP2 is about equal with Encore. But yeah, Em deserves the title, i never said that. But I think we can all agree Encore sucked.

  17. Personally, I perfer Em over Jay, but I still appreaiate Jay’s work. Also you said American Gangster wasn’t heard too much, but it did go platnium,so I don’t get what you are saying.
