Team Evaluation: G.O.O.D. Music

G.O.O.D Music has been around since 2004 and is an acronym for “Getting Out Our Dreams”. This label has an assortment of artist that vary. On one hand you have Common and Mos Def (The Legends) and on another you have Big Sean and CyHi Da Prynce (The Youngsters). Of course the boss Kanye West has found ways to keep everyone on G.O.O.D. in the spotlight. In late 2010 he had put together a cypher with a select group of his artists. One thing to recognize about G.O.O.D. is that it is not a record label; instead it is a management and production team. This gives Kanye an opportunity to grab artists who are already signed to a major label.

Star Players

Kanye West – Mr. West has been one of the craziest characters in the spotlight for almost 7 years now. Unfortunatly that is why people don’t always recognize the quality of his music is always head and shoulders above others. He has dropped five albums and four of them are often argued as classics. Even if you don’t feel like they are, you have to respect that they are apart of the conversation.

Common – Sometimes a change of scenery is the best thing for a great talent. After joining Kanye and his G.O.O.D. camp, Common went from a respectable Emcee to an artist that can also sale. Common has dropped 3 albums under this imprint and 2 of the three have sold a million plus.

KiD CuDi – His music is a little off of the norm, but you can’t deny he has a strong fan following.

John Legend – His voice is unique, although he hasn’t dropped an album as good as Get Lifted (In my opinion). His fan base is as strong as any other R&B artist out there.

Upcoming Stars

CyHi Da Prynce – Ever since the cypher during the BET Hip Hop Awards his buzz has grown immensely. I had no idea who dude was until that cypher aired. His mixtape got pretty good reviews too.

Pusha T – He is the newest member of the acclaimed management team. Since the VMA’s when he first performed with Kanye he has been a buzz in the industry.

Big Sean – While I have never really listened to dude, I hear people call him better than Lil’ Wayne. Even though I doubt this, the comparison shows how much of a hype he has.

Veterans

Mos Def – Although Kanye was able to help Common sell units, I can not imagine he can do the same for Mos. It is unfortunate, but units do not get moved by skills. He is classified as a vet because he will be used sparingly, due to other things he has going on (Movies).

Consequence – Pretty much, he and Mos Def are in the same boat.

GLC – In the same boat with Consequence.

Sidekicks (Bench Players)

Fonzworth Bentley – Not much to say about this.

Malik Yusef – Who?

Mr. Hudson – He dropped an album? Really?

Sa-Ra – Two albums?

*Rumors – Nas is said to be joining the G.O.O.D. music regime. I know I have been knighted the Nas hater, but this would be a nice move for Esco.

*Mistakes – Every label has a bench, but wow G.O.O.D’s is horrible. DAyumn!!!

Bottom line:
Before I started this, I fully expected to give this team an A. Then I saw all the acts that are involved with the squad, and, honestly they have a lot of dead weight. This hurts their grade a lot.

  1. Yeah now that I look at this way there is alot of dead weight. If ‘Ye cant convert it to something, might as well let it go. The upcoming stars will be a factor in 2011 though. Big Sean has a strong following from what I’ve seen. I had a chance to open up for him in’09.

  2. I agree with this some what. I think the move for Mos will definitely be good for him. I’m still waiting for him to drop anothe Black on Both Sides. Big Sean and Chyi are going the flyest things coming from the label. There bench is horrible, it makes Young Money’s look like the dream team.

  3. Pusha T aint no up and coming star he’s either a veteran or a sidekick, and Big Sean only prob is he’s on that bum ass def jam thats gonna hold him back. they dont do ANYTHING for their artists on the come up

    1. Me you and everybody else on this site know Push but that doesn’t mean he’s not an up and comer. Clipse were big (ish) with their first album then their notoriety dropped even tho the next two were strong as well. I’d bet serious money that a lot of ppl who pay attn to Kanye and saw the VMA performance and all the G.O.O.D. Friday looks think Push is a new cat. His profile has been raised that much by the affiliation that he can be considered up and coming. I bet there are even ppl who knew of Clipse but couldn’t identify them on the solo. With the right single he can def put out a successful album this year after all Ye did for him

  4. Hudson’s album release was pretty much a fail in the US but he’s not really dead weight, they need to promote him better cuz dude can be the next hook man. Young Forever was good but he steals the show from Big Sean on Way Out (woulda been a hit single). Also Supernova and Anyone but Him with Kanye are not bad songs. He gels really well with the rap team and can definitely make it off the bench. Dead at your comments about malik and sa-ra, same page on that one

  5. I dont wanna start my Detroit shit again BUT I dont think they should be able to claim the name Good Music until they sign Black Milk

  6. @P, thank you brother. I hear a lot about Drake, J. Cole, Wiz, and Big Sean being leaders of the new school but there is no love for Black Milk. All of his albums are soulful but he still spits bars that can rival most vets in the game. He style is more akin to Slum Village, and I am speculating that most people associate Motown with the hard-hitting, gritty, urban sound. GOOD music would be a great fit for him.

    1. Hell Yeah man I dont know what labels are thinking he’s somewhat young is a spectacular prouducer and makes great music that could easily get play on the radio, and has tremendous crossover potential. His music could be enjoyed by all ages, ethnicities and genders and he has a great track record compared to these other dudes. I cant help but think its a Detroit thing
